Overview

With this vintage GREATEST HITS collection from the notorious helium-voiced rodents, you get not only a charming slice of golden-age-of-American-entertainment humor but an often fascinating look at mid century show biz itself. Most of the 17 cuts feature Alvin, Simon, and Theodore interacting with their mentor/sidekick/babysitter David Seville (Chipmunks creator Ross Bagdasarian). They include all the high-pitched tunes that baby-boomer parents grew up with: the immortal "Witch Doctor" (which, according to Ross Bagdasarian Jr.'s engaging liner notes, culled from a Chipmunks book-in-progress, started the whole 'Munks ball rolling), for instance, and the equally memorable "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)." We also get the Chipmunks doing the Beatles ("Please Please Me"), getting patriotic (a straightforward if thoroughly squeaky "America the Beautiful"), and attempting to go bilingual ("I Wish I Could Speak French.") The final cut is a revealing chat with the younger Bagdasarian (Ross Sr. died in 1972), "interviewed" by Alvin. We find out that the three 'Munks were named after a trio of executives at the Chipmunks' label, Liberty Records; that "The Chipmunk Song" was such an enormous hit that it was sold even in lingerie boutiques and flower shops; it's even hinted that Pop Bagdasarian may not have been the most attentive dad. But it's hard not to be disarmed by the postwar, preirony Chipmunks and their long-suffering keeper. If you're looking for 'Munks duets with current pop stars -- and there have been many such collaborations, with celebrities from Dolly Parton to Will Smith -- you won't find them here, but you will encounter a whole lotta sweet, silly fun.
