Overview

Released in September 2002, this CD was hardly Jesse Colin Young's first Greatest Hits package -- and we can safely assume that it won't be his last. The veteran singer/songwriter, who turned 60 in 2001, has had a long career -- and when an artist has been in business that long, Greatest Hits collections are usually the best way for novices to get acquainted with his/her work. This good-natured disc (which ranges from folk-rock to soft rock) doesn't focus on Young's solo output exclusively; one of the tracks is the Youngbloods' late-'60s smash "Get Together" (which was originally performed by New York folkie Dino Valente and became an anthem for the flower power generation). Most of this 14-song CD, however, is devoted to post-Youngbloods material that Young recorded as a solo artist in the '70s. And while Greatest Hits isn't the last word on his career, it does offer some of the essentials, including "Song for Juli" (written for his daughter), "Morning Sun," "Sunlight," and the jazzy "Ridgetop" (which, like Van Morrison's "Moondance," effectively combines soft rock with an awareness of modal post-bop jazz). Greatest Hits also contains a previously unreleased song titled "Ahoha E," which Young wrote after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. "Ahoha E," however, doesn't mention the attacks specifically, and the '60s-like folk-rock piece recalls Young's work with the Youngbloods. Greatest Hits isn't ideal -- some essential songs are missing -- but for novices, it does offer a concise and rewarding (if imperfect) introduction to Young's legacy.
