Greatest Hits Live

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
In the decades following Fats Domino's 1950s recording heyday, many live albums drawn from his shows have been released. This one, issued by British budget label Prism Leisure, was "licensed from Silver Shadow Productions", which is as much information as the disc copy provides on its source. Since the collection includes a Domino version of the 1985 New Orleans-flavored hit "My Toot Toot," it can be presumed that the show or shows from which the performances were taken occurred sometime in the second half of the '80s or '90s. Whatever the origins, Domino re-creates the original arrangements of some of his biggest hits, including "Blueberry Hill," "I'm in Love Again," and "Whole Lotta Loving," occasionally leaving room for an extended saxophone solo. Audience participation is kept to a minimum in the editing, leaving more room for Domino and the band, who effectively perform material that the leader, anyway, had been charming fans with for 30 or 40 years at this point. As long as the potential buyer is not fooled by the phrase "the very best of" into supposing this album contains the original studio recordings and "in concert" is in the same type face on the cover, it provides a good sampler of his most popular material at a modest price.
