Barnes & Noble - David McGee
This impressive 19-song collection from country singer Martina McBride feels more like a biography than a greatest-hits album. No mere cataloguing of her chart success, Greatest Hits tells the story of a female artist finding her calling, finding herself, and touching a responsive chord with the public. Her 1993 Top Ten breakthrough, "My Baby Loves Me," remains a compelling -- and hard-rocking -- message song about accepting people for their substance rather than their style. "Independence Day," from 1994, has given hope to countless battered women over the years, as has 1997's "Broken Wing," about a woman escaping emotional abuse. McBride chooses songs that speak to ...

McBride chooses songs that speak to real people in the real world, but in life-affirming terms, their subtext urging self-reliance and courage in the face of terror as a means to salvation and spiritual healing. It helps that her beautiful, expressive soprano is as riveting as her texts, making everything she sings as memorable as it is tuneful. As a bonus, the set includes four new songs, and all measure up to the hits. Of these, the cautionary "When God-Fearin' Women Get the Blues" finds McBride extending her domain into a hard-driving, Wynonna-style R&B workout, while the heart-rending "Concrete Angel," another moving tale of a young girl struggling to survive in an abusive household, is destined to take its place among McBride's classics. This is a powerful package, with a lot of bang for the buck in its volume of strong songs with their rich content, and in her heartfelt delivery.
All Music Guide - Maria Konicki Dinoia
Fans of McBride who have waited a long time for a greatest-hits album from the always-fresh, always-captivating McBride won't be disappointed. A stellar collection packed with 18 songs: 14 previously recorded smashes and four new, striking originals. Perhaps the greatest voice in contemporary country music, McBride revisits popular favorites from her last four platinum albums -- from her 1994 Top Ten breakthrough "My Baby Loves Me" through to the propulsive "Love's the Only House." And in between, McBride's incomparable voice belts out a generous mix of familiar favorites, like "Independence Day," "Wild Angels," "Valentine," "Happy Girl," and "Whatever You Say." McBride's magnetic vocals and unmatched artistry reinforce her musical dominance with new songs, such as "Where Would You Be," "Concrete Angel," and "Blessed." A brilliant career retrospective and a must-have for fans.

    Martina Shines Again !!

What a wonderful collection of riveting songs ! Martina can do no wrong when discussing sensitive issues in her songs. She is part of my motivation to be a better person. We are blessed to have such a singer in our midst.

Great Album, But I Wish There Was More!

I love the album, but was sorry to see some of her earliest hits not included. "That's Me," "Cheap Whiskey," and "The Time Has Come" were the songs that got me hooked on Martina in the first place. These surely rank as some of her greatest hits. Nonetheless, a top-shelf album from an incredible artist--highly recommended.

    Incredible

All I can say is that this wonderfully elegant and classy woman could sing the phone book and people would buy it. The best vocal range around and songs with strong, uplifting lyrical messages - both hard to find these days.

    Wonderful!

An over all wonderful CD. My hands down favorite, however, is "Concrete Angel." It is such a sad, and yet such a realistic song that deals with a very important issue.

    Another Point For Martina!

She did it again, she made another killer cd. Crank this cd as loud as you can, and just D-A-N-C-E your heart out. The songs are easy to learn, but harder to sing, as she has such a good, operatic, low voice. Martina, dah-link, you ROCK!!!

    A big fan

I don't think that Martina could ever do any wrong. She proves that in her greatest hits CD. New songs that are fun(God Fearing Women), spiratual (Blessed), and controversal (Concrete Angel). I can't sing along to Concrete Angel without crying. She is my favorite!
