Overview

Billy Corgan has always fueled his music with dichotomy: His dueling drives -- grandiosity and self-loathing -- are what propelled his songs and what connected his Smashing Pumpkins to their disenfranchised audience. This nicely constructed collection traces these qualities throughout the Pumpkins' career. At the band's onset, Corgan was clearly gunning for the top spot on Rock's Most Alienated list, and songs like the white-knuckled angst anthem "Cherub Rock" quickly vaulted him to that apex. Over the course of the decade that followed, Corgan and company covered plenty of ground, airing out beatific melodies like "Today" alongside churning rockers like "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" -- and even dipping into the well of pure pop for ditties like "1979" and their cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide." The first disc winds down with the previously unissued track "Untitled." The limited edition adds a generously appointed bonus disc housing 16 previously unreleased tracks, largely outtakes from later albums like Adore and Machina. While largely spare and subdued in comparison to the expansive, techno-friendly albums that they were initially intended for, songs like "Sparrow" and "Winterlong" emphasize the fragility at the core of Corgan's best material. Fans of the Pumpkins' more ear-damaging side will find plenty to crank up here as well, thanks to thumping rockers such as "Marquis in Spades" and "Saturnine."

Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
Billy Corgan has always fueled his music with dichotomy: His dueling drives -- grandiosity and self-loathing -- are what propelled his songs and what connected his Smashing Pumpkins to their disenfranchised audience. This nicely constructed collection traces these qualities throughout the Pumpkins' career. At the band's onset, Corgan was clearly gunning for the top spot on Rock's Most Alienated list, and songs like the white-knuckled angst anthem "Cherub Rock" quickly vaulted him to that apex. Over the course of the decade that followed, Corgan and company covered plenty of ground, airing out beatific melodies like "Today" alongside churning rockers like "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" -- and even dipping into the well of pure pop for ditties like "1979" and their cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide." This 18-song collection peruses all that territory, adding the edge-dwelling, previously unissued track "Untitled," making it an ideal summation of the stalwart alt-rockers' career.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Like many alt-rock bands, the Smashing Pumpkins sound better than expected when reduced to singles, possibly because their high points were singles, no matter how carefully created their albums were. They had more than enough great material for a good compilation, and Greatest Hits almost fits the bill, although it gives too much credence to the music made after the group's peak. Essentially, anything that most listeners will want to hear wraps up 11 tracks into the 18-track album, when the collection dives into material from Adore and Machina, although even these two albums aren't embarrassments. Still, it does have many of the cuts that fans will want on one disc, including the non-LP "Drown" and "Landslide."

This, admittedly, was the first Pumpkins CD I owned. I figured I'd start with the basics. Now the more I hear of these guys, the more I love them. This is a great starting point for any new fan, as well as an essential inclusion in the collection of any long-time Pumpkinhead. Highly recommended.

A greatest hits c.d. from the Smashing Pumpkins is obviously going to be great. This album spans the Pumpkins' whole career, and really shows the evolutions that they have made as a band. The only real problem I had with it was the absence of "The End is the Beginning is the End." I found the fact that that song was missing a little strange, considering they won a Grammy for it and it's never been on a Smashing Pumpkins album. (It was featured on the soundtrack for "Batman and Robin.) The extra, previously unreleased tracks didn't disappoint either. I especially enjoyed the latter, untitled track, which was driven by guitars and also represented the lighter side of the Pumpkins. "Real Love" was also a decent track, though a little overdone on distortion for my tastes. I'd definitely recommend this album for the casual and the avid Pumpkins fans alike.

Real Love is the only song on this cd that I had not heard before I bought it. I would buy the cd for that one song alone. Its great...steal it!

Ah, the Pumpkins. This is really great. I mean, who doesn't sit back and listen to "1979" and not think of every summer they've had. Who's ever not felt like a rat in a cage, despite all their rage? Timeless.

If you're a Pumpkins fan (or just a fan of ninties alt rock) you have to have this cd. Well, I did at least.

I had initially heard of the Smashing Pumpkins during the 90’s because some of their songs were featured on the radio. I originally purchased this collection of “The Smashing Pumpkins-Greatest Hits-Rotten Apples” in December 2005 when I was still living on the Mayport Naval base (near Atlantic Beach Florida).  The following listing includes some of their classics that are featured on “The Smashing Pumpkins-Greatest Hits-Rotten Apples: “Today”, “Disarm”, “Landslide”, “1979”, “Tonight, Tonight”, and “Ava Adore.” This compilation is good for those who are open to listening to 90’s alternative rock collections.

This GH collection truely offers to you a sample of the great work the Smashing Pumpkins have done over the past 10 (or so) years. Each song takes you to a different era in the band, and also gives a great inroduction to their music if you are a new listener of the Smashing Pumpkins. It also serves as a Sample disc for all their Albums (so you can go out and get the albums u like based on the songs u've heard) although i was dissapointed cuz it diddnt include Thirty-Three but then again they had to make room for the radio only song ''Untitled'' and The Machina II (the internet only album) song ''Real Love'' which are excellent bonus tracks after hearing ''Real Love'' i had to get the Machina II Album. Anyways on to the bonus disc. This album: Judas_0 is the follow up to Pisces Iscariot. Judas_0 is a bit darker than Pisces and a bit heavier. However it does include the on again off again Acoustic songs and no Pumpkins B-Sides Album is complete without a James Iha song, ''Believe'' which is great. Songs like ''Lucky 13'', ''Slow Dawn'' and ''Here's To The Atom Bomb'' give u a sample of the Machina II album (''Saturnine'' on Judas_0 is a different version to Machina II). The stand out tracks on this Bonus Disc are: ''Lucky 13'' ''The Aeroplane Flies High'' ''Rock On'' ''Set The Ray To Jerry'' and ''Believe''. All i have to say is Go get this album the GH part of the CD wont dissapoint for ALL THE TRACKS ARE GREAT! and the if u get the bonus disc consider your self lucky and enjoy it! Great Buy for both the Non-Pumpkins fan and the BIGGEST Pumpkins fan! What wud also go great with the GH CD is the GH video collection! that too is a must get... ITs filled with their videos plus some live stuff (need I say more?!)

Good to see SP release a ''greatest hits'' paried with another b-sides cd. Now all we need is for them to release the final show @ the Metro in Chicago on CD!!!
Guest More than 1 year ago
Awesome CD! I must admit I can't stop listening to it! Got 4 stars because it didnt release some of the other awesome songs they have. Plus it doesnt have ''Muzzle'' one of the best SP songs made.

Well, if you haven't heard 'em before...hear 'em now. If you have heard them before, get it for the 2nd disc of unreleased stuff. The songs are great, and the last release from this great band is sure to be one you'll leave on your stereo!

A legacy came to an end last year and in 2001 is the sum of the life of the Greatest Rock band ever to grace CD players and radio(''play my favorite song''). Those not privy to the Pumpkins definitely need to check out this greatest hits package. Billy Corgan, James Iha, D'arcy, and Jimmy Chamberlain are a superior ensemble ranging from hard, drilling rock to subtle, piano-based ballads.

Incredible. To think all these years I felt it was impossible, if not simply wrong, to create a Smashing Pumpkins ''best of'' album, I surprised myself. For all Pumpkin lovers and those just getting a first taste, this is a great one to own. It has all our radio favorites, amazing rarities, and the album sleeve is a treat in itself--excellent photography. Virtually guaranteed satisfaction!

I already have all the Smashing Pumpkin's previous album's and I would recommend that anyone in the same position should buy this just for the second disc as the song's on it are some of their best material so far. Also anyone that hasn't heard any Smashing Pumpkin's should definetely buy this and believe me you won't be disappointed.
Guest More than 1 year ago
I was expecting the very best of all the pumpkins had to offer, and I got way more than i bargained for. The unreleased tracks on both cds are just amazing and the album as a whole flows perfectly. You NEED this cd.
Guest More than 1 year ago
Look ... if you are a real Pumpkins fan you have all these songs on other CDs you own. The problem with this ''Greatest Hits'' collection is that it ignores some of the fantastic music this band has made that doesn't qualify as a ''hit''. This is just more of the worthless music industry trying to force feed you what they think you want to hear. Take a chance and buy a few whole Pumpkins albums instead of this one. You'll hear why this band is amazing -- it's not becuase they can write hits. It's because they can put together a solid album of amazing songs that will move you.

Smashing Pumpkins Greatest Hits is a must have for any pumpkin lover or those just mildly acquainted with the pumpkins. All the hits are packed in this 2CD set. Unreleased music...need I say more! There's nothing cooler than that. Thank you Smashing Pumpkins for putting together this wonderful compilaton of great music. It's mellow, it's edgy, it just plain rocks!
Guest More than 1 year ago
This is sure to be a great album... because it's THE SMASHING PUMPKINS!!!

Oh man when I heard that Smashing Pumpkins were releasing a greatest hits album, I said COOOOOL. Never in my life had a band so reinvented the genre of alternative music. If you get this album you will not be dissapointed. They will surely be missed.
Guest More than 1 year ago
It's a very good double CD, but the "rotten apples" one is missing some singles and some real good songs like "Muzzle", "Rocket", "33", "Mayonaise", "Try, Try, Try", and "I Am One". I guess they didn't put those in because maybe it wouldn't fit in.
Guest More than 1 year ago
dude....pumpkins......unreleased stuff. It will be your only chance to get this material ever (unless you get mp3 stuff). and the first cd is an essential collection of smashing stuff.
Guest More than 1 year ago
Although many people got into the Pumpkins based soley on their pop music (i.e. Today), this album is for everyone who enjoys good music: it shows all sides of the Pumpkins, from mellow to hard alternative rock. The second album is espically awesome and worth listening to. In short: a must have.
Guest More than 1 year ago
Of course this compilation is going to be phenomonal, its the Smashing Pumpkins for crying out loud! I would tell anyone to buy this 2 disc set.
