Greatest Love Songs

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Dave Gil de Rubio
Frank Sinatra is considered by many to be the premier interpreter of material dealing with matters of the heart, so the greatest challenge in compiling the 22-track Greatest Love Songs was deciding which songs to leave off. Predominantly drawn from Sinatra's '60s Reprise era, with a handful of Capitol sides thrown in, this gorgeous-sounding collection is a tour through the Great American Songbook. Standards by Cole Porter "Night and Day", Rodgers & Hart "My Funny Valentine", and the Gershwins "I've Got a Crush on You" are just some of the jewels bathed in the caress of Ol' Blue Eyes' unique phrasing. Adding to the beauty of these classics is an array of skilled arrangers including Nelson Riddle "The Way You Look Tonight", Johnny Mandel "In the Still of the Night", and Quincy Jones "Fly Me to the Moon [In Other Words]". Perhaps "All The Way," a studio engineered "duet" with Celine Dion recorded posthumously, is an unnecessary bid to connect Frank to today's kids, but they needn't have bothered. Novelist Gore Vidal once wrote that 50 percent of North America's current population was conceived with Sinatra singing in the background, and Greatest Love Songs is likely to keep the family tree growing.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Released in January 2002 as part of the great rush of Valentine-themed releases, Greatest Love Songs outclasses most of the romantic-themed compilations in its genre -- which is only appropriate for the great Frank Sinatra. It outclasses the competition not just because it contains a generous 22 tracks, but because it cross-licenses, containing four cuts from his classic Capitol recordings before delving into his rich '60s Reprise recordings for the majority of the album. Of course, this also means that it has the artificial duet with Celine Dion on "All the Way," but ignore that one misstep and concentrate on the other 21 tracks, which -- unlike many love-themed comps of 2002 -- include many hits and anthems ("My Funny Valentine," "I've Got a Crush on You," "Fly Me to the Moon," "The Way You Look Tonight," "Night and Day," "Strangers in the Night") plus a great selection of lesser-known album tracks. Taken together, it all makes for a collection that doesn't just provide good romantic mood music, it provides a substantial listen. Of course, this doesn't mean that most die-hard fans will need this, since everything is readily available elsewhere, but for those looking for a romantic Sinatra album and who already have Songs for Swinging Lovers, this is a very good choice.

This thoughtful collection of romatic songs, recorded between 1953 and 1965, plays like silk brushed against velvet.

    Sinatra & the Lyric

Sinatra was the best interpreter of the musical lyric in the 20th century. Ask any singer.
