All Music Guide - Steve Leggett
The pairing of James Brown's Live in New York album recorded at Studio 54 in New York on March 26, 1980 with Doin' Their Own Thing, the 1970 debut album from Maceo Parker & All the Kings Men, is both odd and ironic. Given Brown and Parker's long association with each other, it makes some sense, too. Brown was not the easiest man to work for at times, and a frustrated Parker and his brother, the drummer Melvin Parker, quit Brown, taking most of his band in the process, to form All the Kings Men. Rumors are that Brown used his influence in the industry to ensure that releases from the new outfit went nowhere, and they indeed went nowhere. So, as a double-disc set, this package is chock-full of history and context. The constant here is the fine guitar work of Jimmy Nolen, which spans both sets. Truthfully, Brown's band was not in its prime at the time of this live show, although no James Brown outing is ever anything less than solidly funky. Parker's disc is probably ultimately more interesting, with its fine mix of jazz, soul, and funk grooves, including an impressive cover of Sly Stone's "Thank You Falettinme Be Mice Elf Again," which is added here as a bonus track.
