Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
Ancient Greek culture not only influenced life in that time period, but it continues to influence "our knowledge and attitudes today." In a book of 32 pages, it is difficult to summarize the contributions of ancient Greeks and provide a sense of Greek culture today, but Adare has done a good job of doing both. Through clear color photographs and a succinct text, the author shows how the modern culture reflects that of the past. Several Greek gods, such as Zeus, Athena, and Apollo, each have a paragraph. The stories of Persephone and Demeter and Perseus and Medusa are summarized. The contributions of Hippocrates, Archimedes, Pythagoras, Aristarchus, Socrates, and Aristotle are listed. Architecture, clothing, food, religion, festivals, and the Olympics are also discussed. Photographs of ancient sites and statues provide a sense of the past. Photos of modern dancers in traditional attire help the reader understand how the past influences the present day. The statement: "Most people dress like Americans and other Europeans" is backed up with photos as well. A recipe for Amigthalo praline, a candy, is provided. There is no map of the country in this book. This is part of the "Lands, Peoples and Cultures" series and a companion book to Greece: The Land and Greece: The People. When all three books are used together, the reader will have a good overview of Greece, both past and present. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
