Children's Literature - Sharon Salluzzo
After presenting general information about the ethnic composition of the Greek population, Adare addresses life in ancient Greece but her main focus is on life in these islands today. Readers will learn about the differences in city, country and island living. Pastimes, sports, education, kinds of houses, and the importance of family are other topics that are clearly and succinctly discussed. Color photographs show people of all ages in a variety of activities. Photos also show housing in Athens, in the countryside and on the islands, and several ancient Greek sites, such as the Parthenon. These enhance the descriptions and help readers understand what life is like in Greece today. Sidebars are interspersed throughout the book and offer interesting tidbits about the culture (such as a description of the beads known as komboloi, and the use of dynamite as a tribute to a dead fisherman or sponge-diver). A glossary and an index will help readers who are doing research projects. Part of "The Lands, Peoples, and Culture" series, this is a good introduction to life in Greece today.
