Extensively illustrated and clearly written, this book examines the major categories of Greek architecture, sculpture, vasepainting, wallpainting, and metalwork in a historical, social, and archaeological context. It blends factual information with stimulating interpretation and juxtaposes long-standing notions with the latest archaeological discoveries and hypotheses. Focusing on form, function, and history of style, the book explores art and artifacts chronologically from the Early Bronze through the Hellenistic eras (ca. 3000 to ca. 30 BC)–and by medium. For individuals who appreciate–and want to better understand–the art and history of Greece.

Anyone out there who loves art history, you will find this fascinating! Detailed, great pictures, artifacts and works are chronologically ordered (very helpful in a classroom setting that is chronological!). Provides history background. I love Greek art, especially ancient art! Sometimes can be dry if reading big chunks of it in a small amount of time. Sometimes hard to understand if you don't have any background in reading art history. The low rating on gift giving and coffee table is for obvious reasons, unless you know an art fanatic, they probably won't appreciate this. Coffee table? It could look nice, doubt your guests will want to read it. Permanent library? YES!Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
