Like no other survey of the subject, Greek Art and Archaeology has a truly complete range of coverage. Spanning three thousand years, the text and illustrations follow developments in architecture, sculpture, vase painting, and wall painting as they evolve from their earliest appearances in Bronze Age and Aegean cultures to their elaborated and expressive forms in the Hellenistic age, just before the birth of Christ. This second edition integrates all the latest major archaeological discoveries, including the wreckage of a Greek trading vessel raised from the sea near Uluburun, Turkey. And its coverage of Hellenistic art is significantly expanded over that of the first edition. In chapter after chapter, Pedley's lucid narrative is blended with stimulating interpretation, new pictures, and more useful architectural plans and diagrams to produce the most approachable yet authoritative introduction to Greek art and architecture available today.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This useful, scholarly, and well-organized text examines Greek art in an archaeological context, organizing artifacts from c.3000 to 30 B.C. both chronologically and by medium. While the writing is occasionally a bit dry, a common problem for texts attempting to cover such a vast subject, it is fairly accessible. Pedley (classical archaeology and Greek, Univ. of Michigan) does not simply rehash material covered in other texts; he includes information gathered from recent archaeological findings. Most of the numerous illustrations are standard black-and-white archival photographs, but the sketches, maps, and plans are particularly well done and very useful for a clear understanding of the objects and areas depicted. The glossary, chronology, index, and bibliography are excellent. For the undergraduate student or independent learner. --Mary Morgan Smith, Northland P . L . , Pittsburgh
Surveys 3,000 years of Greek architecture, sculpture, vase painting, and wall painting, from the Bronze Age to the Hellenistic Age, for undergraduate students. Each chapter begins with a section on historical background. Early chapters are organized by region, and later chapters focus on types of art and architecture. Includes a glossary. This second edition integrates recent major archaeological discoveries, including the wreckage of a Greek trading vessel raised from the sea near Uluburun, Turkey, and contains expanded coverage of the Hellenistic period. Includes color and b&w photos, diagrams, and architectural plans. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
