Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Denise Hartzler
Hercules is one of the best-known characters from Greek mythology. He is the child of head god, Zeus and of the mortal, Alcmene. This means that Hercules possesses the strengths of gods while still being mortal. As part of his punishment for the murders he committed, he was sentenced for twelve years as a servant to Eurystheus, King of Tiryns and Mycenae. Hercules had to perform twelve Labors, feats so difficult that they seemed impossible. Luckily for Hercules, Hermes and Athena were sympathetic deities who showed up when he needed help. The twelve Labors including fighting a lion, wrestling a bull and riding it back to Eurystheus, fighting armies of men and even a trip to the Underworld. Hercules survived it all and make his the perfect embodiment of an idea to the Greeks called pathos — the experience of virtuous struggle and suffering which leads to fame and for Hercules, immortality. As part of the "Choose Your Path" series, this book requires readers to decide what the main character should do. Once the reader has chosen, they are then given instructions to the next set of pages to either continue the story or come to a screeching halt and start over. By the end of this book readers will take pride in helping Hercules reach his immortality. Terrell did an excellent job in summarizing the twelve Labors without all the details of bloodshed during these extreme punishments. The action is fast and will keep reluctant readers engaged as they flip from one section to the next to see if their decision leads Hercules to doom or safety. Reviewer: Denise Hartzler
