Overview

The gold standard in Greek mythology, in a dazzling Graphic Deluxe Edition with a new introduction by the bestselling author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series

From the creation of the world out of Chaos and the birth of the Olympians to the Trojan War and Odysseus's return, Robert Graves's superb retelling of the Greek myths has long been acclaimed as the definitive edition. Graves draws on sources scattered throughout ancient literature, using a novelist's skill to weave a crisp, coherent narrative of each myth and providing commentaries with cross-references, interpretations, and explanations based on solid scholarship. The result is a classic volume of many of the greatest stories ever told—stories of the gods, heroes, and extraordinary events that inspired Homer, the Greek tragedians, and so much of subsequent European literature.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. Greek Myths 3.9 out of 5 based on 0 ratings. 50 reviews.

After spending a considerable amount of time seeking out a book which contained the most comprehensive survey of Greek mythology available from one source, I finally settled on this book. I actually read the book cover to cover --- by no means an easy task. And so, here is my objective review. If you wish to read a scholarly treatise covering the complex interplay between Greek mythology and Greek history, this is the book for you. However, if you merely wish to read a collection of Greek myths such as those which are generally encompassed within the modern knowledge of contemporary Western society, this is not what you want. Graves' work is a lengthy series of essays and accompanying analyses best suited for serious students of classical Greek history. It is not by any definition light reading, and would be of little interest to those who possess only a casual interest in the subject matter. With those caveats, this is a good book, but not a great one. Even assuming that Graves intends to address an audience comprised exclusively of those who are more serious about studying the underlying subject matter, his writing style is too erudite and lecturing in manner. There should be a better way of relating the material in a more interesting and understandable fashion --- and I make this critique as one who studies this kind of material regularly. I give Graves a rating of "4/5" with the assumption that the reader is interested in a serious student of history; if not, the rating would be somewhat lower.
