Overview

Endymion, Pelops, Daedalus, Pygmalion -- we recognize the names, but what are the stories behind these and other familiar gods from the Greek pantheon -- names that recur throughout the history of European culture?

Drawing on an enormous range of sources, Robert Graves has brought together elements of these myths in simple narrative form. He retells the adventures of the most important gods and heroes of the ancient Greeks. His work has become the reference for the serious scholar as well as the casual inquirer.

"A brilliant and erudite contemporary interpretation." (B-O-T Editorial Review Board)

After spending a considerable amount of time seeking out a book which contained the most comprehensive survey of Greek mythology available from one source, I finally settled on this book. I actually read the book cover to cover --- by no means an easy task. And so, here is my objective review. If you wish to read a scholarly treatise covering the complex interplay between Greek mythology and Greek history, this is the book for you. However, if you merely wish to read a collection of Greek myths such as those which are generally encompassed within the modern knowledge of contemporary Western society, this is not what you want. Graves' work is a lengthy series of essays and accompanying analyses best suited for serious students of classical Greek history. It is not by any definition light reading, and would be of little interest to those who possess only a casual interest in the subject matter. With those caveats, this is a good book, but not a great one. Even assuming that Graves intends to address an audience comprised exclusively of those who are more serious about studying the underlying subject matter, his writing style is too erudite and lecturing in manner. There should be a better way of relating the material in a more interesting and understandable fashion --- and I make this critique as one who studies this kind of material regularly. I give Graves a rating of "4/5" with the assumption that the reader is interested in a serious student of history; if not, the rating would be somewhat lower.
