Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
For fans of Little Critter and his family, this story of creating a garden conveys a real message of how much effort it takes to grow your own food. The whole family heads for the garden store where they buy seeds and plants. Dad rents a rototiller to dig up the soil and the kids are put to work removing stones and clumps of grass. Then the plants have to be watered and weeded as they grow and it takes a long time for plants to grow. Little Critter is back in school which would imply that it is almost fall. They start a compost heap (although realistically this would be for next year's garden) and include some worms as well as good bugs to eat the bad bugs. The deer arrive and manage to eat up some of the delicious vegetables. Finally it is time to harvest the fruits of their labor. It is generally a good lesson about going green and what it takes to create a home vegetable garden. Don't miss the little mouse that keeps appearing on the pages. Part of the "I Can Read!" series this title is a My Frist shared reading which is aimed at sharing with emergent readers. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot

    Perfect For All Little Gardeners

Two of my little grands discovered gardening this year and were delighted by this book about their favorite storybook character, Little Critter who found out about gardening, too.

As always, Mercer Mayer comes through with an early reader that is for children ages 2-7; that is, for children who are just starting to recognize that books have words and not just pictures, as well as children just learning to read.

These "Little Critter" books will delight children and parent/grandparents, guaranteed.
