Overview

“Isn't it beautiful out here?” Jacqueline was draped elegantly across the front seat of her husband's Jeep Cherokee. “Just look at those gorgeous, rolling hills.”
Madeleine stared at her from the seat in back. She saw nothing but rocks, urinating cows, and more rocks.
“I think I've been in the city too long.”
“The cabin and the lake will charm you, Madeleine, as it has charmed the two of us,” said Manuel in his thick accent.
She looked back to the highway in time to see a dead, bloated black and white cow being lifted out of the road by a tow truck. Beyond the truck were two large black tires stuck on fence posts, the words Keep Out written on the sides in big white letters.
Madeleine closed her eyes and decided to sleep the rest of the way. Five years ago she would have looked at the land and its inhabitants with different eyes. She would have been curious, interested in the geological aspects, and full of wondering about the humans who might have wandered the area centuries ago. Now she felt nothing but a mild case of carsickness from riding in the back seat.
“Almost there now,” said Manuel, cheerful but tired.
He had been called in for emergency surgery at the last minute, delaying their start by several hours. It would be dark soon, so Madeleine wouldn't be able to see much that day. Jacqueline assured her they would explore the lake together the next morning. The two of them had gone shopping for food that afternoon and brought along a month's worth of supplies with them. Fresh items could be bought in the tiny town of Green Lake, just four miles away from the reservoir or in Fayville a larger town a dozen miles away. Anything else she required she could tell Jacqueline, who would bring it with her from the city.
“You should feel safe at the cabin,” Manuel informed her. “Your nearest neighbor is a conservation officer.”
“A what?”
”A game protector,” said Jacqueline. “They were known as game wardens before, but they're called conservation officers now. We met him last year. His name is Eris Renard.”
“French?” asked Madeleine.
“No,” said Jacqueline. “He's an Indian.”
“Oh,” said Madeleine, suddenly uncomfortable.
“Did he ever say what kind?” Jacqueline asked Manuel.
“What kind?” Manuel echoed, and his wife waved a hand.
“Madeleine should be able to tell us. That kind of thing is her specialty.”
Madeleine glanced at her. “I doubt I'll be able to tell what nation he's from just by looking at him.”
“Not looking. Hearing. I thought dialects were your thing.”
“Linguistics, Jac. Languages.”
“Sorry, I keep forgetting.”
“Me too,” Madeleine said under her breath.
“There's another conservation officer that comes around in the summer,” Jacqueline went on. “He stays mostly on the water, checking out the boats and such, but this one is a real looker. He won't say much to you, but then neither does Renard. They're polite and all, but they keep pretty much to themselves.”
“This Renard lives in a cabin?” asked Madeleine, and Manuel nodded.
“There are several year-round residents. He's one of them. You will meet him soon, since his is the nearest cabin. Most of the other cabins are down the hill, in Briar's Cove. Ours is near the cemetery—”
“A cemetery?”
”A really old one,” said Jacqueline. “Most of the stones are so weathered you can't even read them. It's a shame, really. You won't be able to see it tonight, but I'll show it to you in the morning.”

Green Lake 4.3 out of 5 based on 2 ratings. 436 reviews.

This book is about 580 pages long. It was pretty well edited for a freebie. It is a hard core mystery. There are no soft edges to this plot. This book deals with suicide, spouse and child abuse, pediphilia, sexual attraction to the dead, alcohal and drug abuse, insanity, rape, extremely violent, graphic murder, graphic sex, arson, hit and run, revenge, adultry, animal abuse and racial bias. There is also romance. About the only thing this book lacked was an over abundance of cursing, which I am not complaining about. I have probably left a few out, but these are the main ones. There were a few minor editing problems. Some of the B & N free books are almost unreadable because of errata, so it is nice to find none or just a few mistakes. ( none, never happens.) The plot was good, I knew early on, whodunit, but as the crime rate at Green Lake continued to climb, so did the whodunits. This book really held my interest. I started reading it at 9 P M and finished at 3 A M. It was fascinating. I would recommend this book to male and female readers, 18 years of age and up. AD

Great conflict between two main characters. Loved the qirky and creepy characters around green lake. Wonderful growing connection and sex between the two. Hated the too graphic perverted descriptions. Hated the perverted ending. It was like the author could not make up her mind between a modern love story with culture difficulties and a story about grisley violence and perversion.

OMG! This was one of the best free books I've ever read! I will say its not for the feint of heart, it deals with issues that many readers will not feel comfortable with such as adultery, murder, kidnapping of a minor and pedophilia, amongst many other subjects considered taboo. All of the characters were very well described, the story flowed nicely and I mostly enjoyed how both main characters were far from perfect. Eris was not the perfect specimen of a man, the sexual interaction was fumbled and far from ideal but it was how real people do it, it got better as it progressed....very realistic! I gave it only four stars because there were a few grammatical errors and the book just sort of abruptly ended, that was a bit disappointing. Outside of that it was a very interesting and engaging read! SR

I just want the author to know I would gladly pay to read more from you! Yes, this book was free, but it is very long and very well written! Sit back and get to know the creepy residents that live year round at "the lake"!

What a fantastic book! The characters were wonderful, the storyline is complex and it's evolvement makes it impossible to put the book down! Absolutely loved it ! Highly recommended!!!

I loved the story line between the 2 main characters. But the rest of the book was nasty and poorly written. A man who mastubates on a dying person, really? Nasty. Racism was rampant as well. A 3 yo was killed with semen in her stomach and the reader was made to read about it several times, yuck. I am a lover of books and hate to write a negative review but this book was nasty. Why not just stick with the romance between the 2 lead characters? I really wonder about the sanity of this author. Bottom line, I finished the book but would never read another by this author.

To all those people who bit@#$d about the abrupt ending, what more do you want! Allthe loose ends get tied up and the perverted antagonist gets exactly what he deserves, as do both protagonists...oh and this book is not 600pages!! Its under250!

I thought this was a very good story, held my interest all through the story, it was well written and I would read more of this authors novels. I found this book in the free section, well worth reading. It is over 600 pages, but worth it.

A little slow starting off but built quickly to a page turner I couldn't put down. A little graphic at times but the story and characters kept me hooked. Will definitely be reading more by this author. S.K.

I had read the reviews and almost DIDN'T read it as l don' t like smutty books. The sex was not the graphic " how to" scenes, even the pedophilia section was not great in detail or length for which l was pleased there was restraint here. I read this in one day in three sittings. A fast read that was difficult to put down. I would recommend this to any adult thriller loving reader.

Glad I read some of the reviews first. One review sugested to pay close attention, because a lot of stuff happens and boy-o-boy does it! Well written, lots of twists and turns, had my emotions on a roller coaster ride and definitely a mystery/romance book, but not your typical. Definitey different and so worth a read!

What an amazing story. At one point there was so much going on, I felt as though I was rushing from one story arc to another, whilst still worrying about the one before. I definitely got myself in a tizz and felt very worn out by the end of it. I spent a lot of time fretting over Madeleine’s safety! The lake residents were a complete bunch of weirdoes which belies the fantasy about living in the country and enjoying increased freedom. I thought they were incredibly odd until I looked out of my kitchen window...I didn’t like Eris at first but as time wore on I completely loved him. So many influences whispering in that poor man’s ear and the whole time I wanted to shout, ‘Don’t listen!’ Madeleine is not your average heroine. For a start, she’s older and wiser. I loved the psychological aspects of where the characters had come from and what pressures on them contributed to who they became. The Native American thread was vibrant and fascinating and it was good to see racism depicted from both angles for a change. It was a refreshing novel and I will be sure to hunt down more of this writer’s work.

You people should just read this novel yourselves and write your own review on this novel. I really enjoyed reading this novel very much. ShelleyMA

Justice can be found by most. This twisted from begining to end, and it is easy to lose the story if you are not close in it...but very worth the read if you have the time to concentrate.

Not really a horror book at all.. but mystery, sure. And it covers some pretty taboo topics. I found myself really rooting for Eris and Madeline. I wasn't searching for a romance story but this is just a little more than that, I think. Not bad for a freebie

This story gives you a sense of hope and love for the underdog. A strange community has its own dark side where a beautiful romance can blossom.

After reading some reviews, I expected the book to be more gory-type horror and perversion. It's actually a more subdued type of action. Storyline kept me interested. The prose is nicely written and flows well. Many editing errors, however, including one huge copy/pasted paragraph completely out of place, but overall readable.

I was a little worried about this book being free but it ended up being really good. Im glad I gave a chance. A warning though, parts of it are disturbing.

I gave this three stars because the main male character has to beone of my favorites of the books I've read in quite some time, and he is different from any of the others. The story is well written and draws you in. The editing errors aren't as bad as some and don't interfere with the story. I really didn't want put it down. However, this book is filled with serious violence, some very demented characters and subjects that are seriously disturbing. Aside from the sex that is in a lot of romance novels this one includes suicide, murder, domestic violence, rape, pedophilia, assault, revenge, necrophilia, animal abuse and is particularly descriptive. The romance portion of the story was great. The violence was horrible and nauseating. While the leading charters are very good I'm not sure I could read this again. The last chapter, in my opinion, is too demented and horrible for words and can be skipped without detracting from the story in the least. I wish I had skipped it. If you are sensitive to violence do not read this. I wish I could have read this without the heavy descriptions of the violence.

This book, though dealing with some dark subject matter, had interesting main characters that kept my attention and made we want to keep reading find out how their romance would develop.
