Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Hal Jordan, Green Lantern 2814.1, has had a rough time. He's been mind-controlled into supervillainy, killed, brought back as a spirit of vengeance and miraculously returned to sanity and superpowers. Unsurprisingly, new readers find it confusing. Now Booster Gold writer Johns has gone back to the beginning for a flashback explaining who Hal Jordan is and why we should care. A hardy, brash sort of hero, undeterred by constant danger and heartbreak, Hal won't let anything stop him from piloting. One day he stumbles upon what he assumes is a crashed plane, only to find it is the ship of a dying alien. Recruited into the Green Lantern Corps of galactic police as the dead being's replacement, in quick succession, Hall is issued with a superpowered Green Lantern ring and shipped off to the planet Oa for training. Rather than beginning his heroic career as the golden boy of the corps, Hal instead immediately starts questioning his more powerful and experienced superiors and bonds with future supervillain Sinestro. Johns gets across what makes Jordan unusual for a superhero-he's more of a lucky choice than a destined hero. The clean, expressive art by Reis and Albert captures the heedless, fearless Hal perfectly in a story that isn't horribly daunting for newcomers. (Dec.)

Gr 9 Up

This is the story of how Hal Jordan became the Green Lantern; or rather, how Hal Jordan became Hal Jordan. Stemming from a childhood trauma, he shuts off his family and his emotions. His only focus is using his airplane to push the limits. He's cocky, reckless, and fearless. A second tragedy drives him to sabotage his job and return home where he works as a lowly mechanic. When an alien spaceship crash-lands on the airfield, Jordan is set up to meet his fate. He's summoned, against his will, to be a Green Lantern. The plot moves quickly, but enough time is given to revealing character motivations and flaws. Although the protagonist is not always likable, he is honorable and ultimately realizes what he must overcome. The best part of "Green Lantern" comics, the color, is on full display. The alien powers literally light up the page. The human beings are the main players, but there are plenty of strange aliens to gawk at-even a chipmunk Green Lantern. This story sets up future story lines, but no prior knowledge of the Green Lantern mythology is needed to enjoy it. Unfortunately, there's no answer to the burning question: What's with the yellow immunity?-Sadie Mattox, DeKalb County Public Library, Decatur, GA

Geoff Johns, a Detroit native, brings a Hollywood sense of story-telling to comics. After working as an assistant to Richard Donner (director of Lethal Weapon, Superman and many other great films), Geoff has brought his considerable writing talent to comics. Not enough story for the price!!

Let me say that I love Johns' GL and all the Sinestro Corps War stuff but this trade just didn't have enough meat to it. I did really like some of the complete tales like the Kyle vs. Parallax and the Superman-Prime one. Other than that it was eating appettizers instead of a meal. Overall, nothing vital to the story and not enough to reread.

Johns weaves past and present together beautifully!

Geoff Johns follows up the Sinestro Corps War with an amazing look at the beginning of Hal Jordan's career as Green Lantern and the end of the life of Hal's predecessor, Abin Sur. Seeing the beginnings of villains such as Sinestro, Hector Hammond, and Black Hand was great and conecting it all in some way to the Blackest Night is exciting. I look forward to each and every new trade. Great stuff!

    prelude to the Blackest Night!!

Johns has done it once again. Not only did he bring back Hal Jordan from the purgatory he was sent to but really defined what it means to be a Green Lantern. In this Story, The Red Lanterns are on the rise full of rage but also shows the emergence of the Blue Lanterns. It explains who they are and why they are important. Also, it reveals who their "guardians" are. I won't give anything away but if your a fan of Green Lantern and The DC universe, then Rage of the Red Lanterns is for you!

    An Incredible New Beginning

This is where I first started reading Green Lantern and was drawn into an incredible universe. The rebirth of Hal Jordan is truly remarkable and memorable. After falling from grace, Hal Jordan returns to his former glory as the hero we all known him as. Geoff Johns writing and every artist involved have made Green Lantern: Rebirth one of the best Green Lantern stories.

    The more Lanterns the better!!!

The next chapter in Geoff Johns' epic Green Lantern story hits the nail on the head and ramps the action, violence, and intrigue up to the next level. Death, betrayal, fights, sub-plots, new charcaters, and more are just a part of what makes this book great. The art by Shane Davis, Mike McKone, and Ivan Reis is fantastic. Great stuff.

Johns knows GL better than anyone and it shows.

How on Earth can Geoff Johns take one of the most convoluted histories in comics and making it make sense and making it thrilling all the while dropping seeds for payoffs 5 years down the line? I guess the simple answer is, he's an incredible writer. Throw terrific art work into it and you have a fantastic read!

Johns' Green Lantern IS Green Lantern!!

Without reading many GL tales not involving the JLA I was worried this story could be lost on me but I was able to pick it up pretty easily and enjoy every page. All three artists were unique but still refined. The last three chapters were worth the cover price alone. Johns knows Hal better what seems possible. Really good stuff!

THE RETURN OF THE TRUE GREEN LANTERN

Green Lantern: Rebirth ties up loose plot lines and reveals answers to questions that have plagued Green Lantern fans for decades, such as what really is the story behind the power ring¿s impurity and its vulnerability to yellow, as well as some startling new information about GL¿s arch-enemy Sinestro. No one re-tools their major characters like DC, due in part to their own lack of confidence in the character often times. And no one has had a bumpier ride in recent years than poor Hal Jordan. Seeing Coast City destroyed Hal tries to recreate it leading to a conflict with the Guardians, and Hal¿s usurping the power of the central battery to become Parallax, destroying most of the Guardians and other Green Lanterns, before finally sacrificing himself to save Earth¿s sun. Hal would then become bonded with the Spectre as the new Spirit of Vengeance. All of the surviving Green Lanterns play a role in the book including Kyle Rayner, John Stewart, Killowog, and yes, even Guy Gardner. While off at the edges of space Kyle learns finds an alien race living in terror. His ring translates the name ¿Parallax¿. Kyle returns to Earth as he and the other Green Lanterns soon come under the influence of a menacing influence. Guy Gardner even has his body turned inside out as he¿s taken for treatment to the JLA and Mr. Terrific. Meanwhile Hal is having his own problems controlling the Spectre¿s thirst for vengeance which is growing more and more aggressive, literally turning the hand of the villain ¿Black Hand¿ to coal. The Justice League is growing suspicious of Hal as well, particularly Batman who has never had a great affinity for Jordan to begin with. Soon the appearance of Ganthet, the last of the original Guardians, brings some startling revelations about the history of the Guardians, Parallax, the power rings, Sinestro, and the source of the impurity. I won¿t play spoiler and reveal and of this, but the words astonishing and shocking come to mind right off the bat. You know of course that Hal returns as Green Lantern and has his first formal introduction to the man who replaced him, Kyle Rayner. He also has a long overdue confrontation with Batman who still doesn¿t trust him. In many ways, this is Kyle Rayner¿s finest hour as he provides the first warnings about Parallax, and takes on a supped-up Sinestro on his own¿just in time for Hal to return, not to mention Guy Gardner. Long time Green Lantern fans are sure to be ecstatic about the return of one of the original Silver Age icons as they never really took to Rayner or Stewart and Gardner was generally only good for a few laughs. How DC handles Hal (not to mention the Spectre) from here on out becomes the new question. The story wraps up nicely and for a change we have a story that doesn¿t leave issues dangling. The Story was written by Geoff Johns, one of the most stalwart and reliable scribes in comics today. The art by Art by Ethan Van Sciver and Prentis Rollins was very solid without being too ¿showy¿. The hardcover book also provides background information and creator commentary on various aspects of the story which also serve to help tie things all together. A gallery of alternate covers is also included. Green Lantern: Rebirth is without a doubt one of the most important storylines from DC in recent years. Reviewed by Tim Janson

    Hal's Return

For those lovers of the Green Lantern and DCU in general, the return of the greatest Emerald champion ever has come, and is going to be one hell of a show between the last green corps and the one who destryoed them in the first place...Parallax!
