Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leona Illig
This book, part of a series called "Green Generation," is a quick and easy primer on global warming and on what we can do to reduce our carbon footprint and save energy. Subjects include how to shop for energy-saving products, how to reuse and recycle items, and how to make the most of our backyards. The book contains eye-catching statistics (it takes one million years for a plastic jug to decompose in a landfill) and colorful photographs, as well as quotes from a number of well-known movie stars. While to some critics the layout may appear cluttered, the design will probably appeal to younger readers. At sixty-four pages, it would be a great addition to any science teacher's library. Since green technology is constantly evolving, teachers may want to challenge their students to improve on the suggestions in the book. For example, the section on how to water the lawn could be turned into a debate on whether we should be watering our lawns at all. Similarly, the section on the advantages of organic food could be supplemented with a report on what would happen if all farmers used no pesticides. Reviewer: Leona Illig

Gr 7-9– Strong visual appeal is this series' best asset. The cover design, layout, and graphics feel hip and of the moment. The clear writing is easy to understand and includes many concrete examples of environmentally friendly practices. Rather than focusing on a small, specific aspect of issues, these chatty narratives take a broader approach, with chapters covering everything from the Clean Air Act (Protecting the Planet) and the politics of global warming (Climate Fever) to using energy-efficient light bulbs (Green Living) and how hydropower works (Alternative Energy). Although there are many charts, tables, and photographs, diagrams are strangely absent from the texts. Nevertheless, these are good choices for both leisure reading and reports.
