Very readable and fun, The Green Pharmacy is the culmination of the author's 30 years of studying and using herbs. In an interesting mix of folklore and science, Duke, a botanist and authority on healing herbs, describes treatment protocols for over 120 health conditions. Although there is frequent reference to experts and studies, including up-to-date findings from the German Commission E monographs, no accurate references or bibliography are provided.     Amazing Book--Highly Recommended--A Must Read

    This book gives endepth information on herbs for healing. He gives what it is ,therapeutic uses, medicinal uses, dosage options, safety rating and precautions. Having read twenty books on herbs this one is THE BEST I've read. Herbs and their uses don't change. Scientific studies should be used to evaluate herbs only if they are scientifically significant. The study also has to use a large enough sample for it to be valid. Age has taught me that health recommendations change with the "newest" study and then switch back when that study is shown to be not valid.

    good general reference but a little dated

    I found the book to be a good general reference source but some of the information seemed dated. For example, further research on St. John's Wart, revealed it doesn't act somuch as MAO inhibitors as SSRI. Also, the section regarding the HRT for menopause, where he states the research that traditional HRT did protect women from heart disease whereas the recent research concluded it raised the heart disease rate. I was also disappointed that the book didn't include enough about specific information regarding some contraindications, I'm familiar with the past case history where Kava caused some side effects of scaly skin and possible liver damage. Though it may not be common, the author should have included some of these information.
