Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Baumann
Rabbit is excited. Not only is St. Patrick's Day just a few days off, Rabbit has seeds to grow shamrocks. He will make a shamrock necklace to wear in the parade. Rabbit carefully plants and tends to his shamrocks until they are big enough to make into a necklace. The night before the parade Rabbit dreams of proudly marching in the parade wearing the shamrock necklace. The next morning the green shamrocks in the yellow pot are GONE. Rabbit checks with Woodchuck, no shamrocks. Woodchuck sends him to Goat who has his green shamrocks in the yellow pot. But Goat assumes the wind gave them to her as a gift. Once the misunderstandings are resolved, Rabbit has his shamrock necklace, Goat has her pot, and they both march in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. Bright illustrations of woodland characters add zest to this simple story of misunderstanding. Preschoolers through first graders will enjoy the word repetition of "green shamrocks and yellow pot" and silliness of Goat wanting to wear a pot on her head. Lessons on plants and friendship as well as new vocabulary about St. Patrick's Day and shamrocks can be woven into story hour. Reviewer: Nancy Baumann
