Overview

Green Up Your Cleanup is a timely handbook of advice and cleanser "recipes" that explains how to eliminate toxic-chemical household cleaning agents from your life and replace them with natural, and often homemade solutions. Inspired by the author's experience as a mother of an allergic child, the book includes anecdotal information that led her to natural cleaning solutions and has "green facts," "smart tips," and informational sidebars generously sprinkled throughout the text.

The book is divided into three parts, "The Basics," "Inside Jobs," and "Dirty Jobs," and covers everything from green-cleaning the kitchen to green-cleaning the car. A handy size and a spiral binding make it easy to keep on hand as a reference as you do the chores.

Meet the Author

Green has always been a part of author Jill Potvin Schoff's life, as she was born and raised in the Green Mountains of northern Vermont. The mountains instilled in her a love of clean air, clean water, and all living things. She learned almost forgotten rural arts like canning, pickling, and maple sugaring at her mother's and grandmother's knees. When she became a wife and mother, it was natural that she would be drawn to a simpler way of life that put less burden on the planet and fewer toxins in the way of her family. She keeps herself busy raising a 2-year-old, writing and designing books, growing organic vegetables, and running her own Internet company. Green Up Your Cleanup is her second book.

reen Up Your Cleanup is a cleverly designed book with a standard spine that hides a spiral bound. It is a full color green cleaning manual. For example, several pages are devoted to explaining how to clean windows with large illustrations. Green products are used, as is a squeegee (instead of wasteful paper towels.) I like the suggested green cleaning potions--lots of vinegar and baking soda--both of which are cheap and very effective. What stood out to me was the practical spiral format, as it allows the book to lie flat and be used as a manual. The manual style is why this book is best suited for those who do not know how to clean. This is a perfect housewarming gift for young people who don't know how to clean and are moving into their first home. I've read 'em all and this is my favorite - comprehensive 'but not overloaded or granola-goody-goody', well-illustrated, relevant, and you've gotta love the spiral binding so the book can lay flat.
