Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-- A young girl introduces readers to the various animals at Greenbrook Farm. It's spring, so there are many new babies; she even has a new brother. There is no plot, but the narration gives a warm feeling of interaction. This is enhanced by the skillful, impressionistic paintings that are reminiscent of the work of Mary Cassatt. There are, however, some inconsistencies. Occasionally the pictures do not accurately reflect the text. For example, a nest with two baby birds is described, but three are shown. Also, the text itself can be misleading. In one passage, it states that the jays chase other birds away from the seed in the bird feeder. ``Some of the birds fly away, but not the tiny hummingbirds.'' This gives the impression that hummingbirds eat from the feeder. Libraries will need to balance their need for a pleasant, bucolic look at farm life against this book's deficiencies. --Karen James, Louisville Free Public Library, KY
