Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
One of the driving forces of human history, sadly enough, is violent human conflict. Learn how the civilization of ancient Rome lasted for over 1,200 years in this highly comprehensive examination of the Roman military. Chapters with titles such as The Development of Manipular Tactics and Fortifications and Siege Warfare are packed with information. Fact boxes break up the chapters with in-depth discussions of specific topics. Numerous maps and illustrations depicting battle plans and defense systems are also scattered throughout the book. Of equal interest are the many pictures of re-enactors authentically attired and armed as the various participants in the armies. A detailed chart of the Legions of the Early Empire along with a glossary and bibliography conclude the volume. These books will be of special interest to the middle to upper elementary aged boy, and would be an excellent way to get into a history lesson without calling it such! The author, a historian, has written a number of books about ancient Rome as well as serving as editor of Classical Greece and Rome. This volume is part of the "History of Weapons and Warfare" series that also includes the titles Ancient Egypt, The Civil War, and The Middle Ages. 2003, Lucent Books/The Gale Group,

School Library Journal
Gr 4-6 In four brief chapters, Nardo covers family life and homes; work, workers, and education; public baths; and worship. Throughout, he examines the different roles played by men and women, adults and children, slaves and free men, and rich and poor. There's nothing new here, but the author presents his information clearly without fictionalizing, and offers some first-person accounts by period writers. The illustrations are mostly color reproductions of Roman mosaics and medieval etchings and wood prints, but there are a few quality color photographs as well. The layout is clear and logical. An informative introduction that will have some appeal for reluctant readers. -Lynda S. Poling, Long Beach Public Library, CA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
