Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Sharon H Chou, MD (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This is a concise but thorough overview of the physiology, pathophysiology, and clinical management of each endocrine gland, with an emphasis on diagnostic testing and specific treatment guidelines.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate trainees and to help guide management of endocrine patients.
Audience: It is intended for trainees. As an endocrinology fellow, I feel it is appropriate for this level.
Features: The book systematically reviews the embryology and anatomy of each endocrine gland briefly and then describes normal physiology. A detailed review of the clinical evaluation of the endocrine gland, the associated diseases, and their management follows. The book not only thoroughly describes how to perform and interpret diagnostic tests, it also explains when these tests are most helpful in narrowing down the differential diagnosis. The overview of each clinical disease is brief, but with an emphasis on management, which can be very specific. Chapters cover the endocrinologic management of specific clinical conditions, including the endocrinology of pregnancy, geriatric endocrinology, and AIDS endocrinopathies. A variety of visual aids, including photographs of clinical signs, radiographic images, cartoons, and graphs, support the text. The appendix includes the normal values for a wide variety of hormone levels by sex and age, as appropriate. However, the index does not quite capture all the content. It also would be helpful if the book referred readers to major society guidelines, when applicable.
Assessment: This is an excellent overview of the basic physiology and clinical aspects of endocrinology for trainees. The size of the book and the well-written text, supported by visual aids, make this a convenient book to read and develop a beginning foundation in endocrinology, to be supplemented by journal articles, more topic-specific reference books, and larger reference books (i.e. Williams Textbook of Endocrinology, 12th edition, Melmed et al. (Elsevier, 2011)). This update is definitely necessary given the rapid progress in medicine in general.
