Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathryn Erskine
Have you ever wondered how your state—or any other—got its name? Many come from Indian names, of course, but this book will take you through all fifty states and the District of Columbia to clarify the origin of each. The fun doesn't stop with states' official names. No, Keenan presents humorous and competing stories about state nicknames, too. Did you know that Delaware is nicknamed "the diamond state" not because it has diamonds but because of its prime location on the east coast? Or that the nickname "goober" for Georgia comes from an African word for peanut? Or that Hawaii could have been named "Sandwich" after the Earl of Sandwich? Or that New Mexico is "the land of enchantment" thanks to a 1906 book which called it that? Or that "the sooner state" refers to pioneers who entered Oklahoma sooner than others in order to grab land before they were supposed to? This book contains interesting facts for the home or the classroom, and makes a nice accompaniment to those now-completed state quarter collections. The bright, lively illustrations provide much information about each state. Reviewer: Kathryn Erskine
