Editorial Reviews

VOYA
From 1976 to 1978, Ballantine produced three magnificent Tolkien calendars featuring the art of brothers Greg and Tim Hildebrandt. The twin brothers were unusual, eccentric, and immensely talented painters who exploded into the public eye with the 1976 Tolkien calendar, which was the best-selling calendar for that year. In this book, Greg's son Gregory, who was five years old when his father and uncle started painting the calendar art in 1975, takes the reader back in time to their studio to see how they worked. The book is chock full of paintings, sketches, and photographs, and Greg and Tim add their comments to Gregory's reminiscences. He recreates his five-year-old mindset as he observed the magic created in the studio and participated as well—Gregory posed for all the hobbits in the calendars. He briefly mentions the tension that Greg and Tim began to experience as the public perceived them as one entity, but his focus is on the paintings they created for the calendars. With all the hoopla generated by the ongoing film trilogy of The Lord of the Rings, this book should appeal to new readers as well as to those who possessed the original calendars (including this reviewer). Librarians, watch out for the pullout poster of a new painting by the brothers! Illus. Photos. Artists interpretations of Middle-earth are legion, but those by the brothers Hidebrandt are among the best. This collects their complete gallery (197 paintings) of Tolkien art. This book will make LOTR fans reach nirvana. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
School Library Journal
Adult/High School-A lavishly illustrated book written by the son and nephew of fantasy and science fiction artists Tim and Greg Hildebrandt. These talented brothers painted the artwork for the popular J. R. R. Tolkien calendars. The vivid color pictures illustrate their fantastic imagination and their concepts in bringing to life the characters and locations of Tolkien's Middle-earth. The lively story gives readers an inside peek at not only this creative team's work, but also their methodology in creating the fantasy paintings for the calendars. This semiautobiographical account also gives insight into the younger Hildebrandt's unorthodox childhood. With all the interest in Tolkien's work and the first part of the movie trilogy now out, it is fascinating to see the characters and settings come to life through the work of the Hildebrandts.-Patricia White-Williams, Kings Park Library, Fairfax County, VA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

    Superb Visual Text

Succinctly put: I thoroughly enjoyed the images of their paintings and sketches. Also insightful was the artists' short comments about the particular works. The only thing that detracted from the book was the younger Gregory's somewhat flowery text. It also stretched the imagination that a 5 to 7 year old would recall so many instances in such detail - but as I say, this is a minor point. In its place I would have appreciated Tim and Greg sharing indepth thoughts about their works-in-progress as well as elaborated retrospective comments. Irregardless, this book is a 'must-have' for all Hildebrandt fans.
