Children's Literature - Laura Backman
Times are tough and money is tight. Even Grandma has to go back to work. Greg, his sister April, and cousins James and Charles, all live with Grandma and Grandpa McNair. Greg's grandparents need everyone to pitch in and help out around the house if they want to earn their allowances. Greg wants to buy a new video game but needs to earn extra cash for the purchase. He takes the honest approach by helping out around the neighborhood to earn the money needed. His cousin, James, gets what he wants by stealing and tries to convince Greg to join him and his gang. Greg is tempted to enlist when James waves the very game Greg wanted in front of him. Will Greg the Good make the right choice and keep his reputation in the community as a hard-working, honest kid or will he lose the respect he has gained by giving into temptation? Large text is just right for transitional readers and black and white illustrations add nonverbal communication to the story. This title would be a suitable companion in a school character education program. The story and the back matter provide opportunities for classroom discussions about choices and consequences.
