Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Greyhounds are one of the oldest dog breeds, dating back to Egypt. They were bred for their ability to run fast and were used in Europe in a sport called coursing. The dog would follow a set course and chase small game. Today greyhounds are mostly bred to be used on courses and racetracks. Greyhounds are swift and intelligent as well as graceful. They are very sensitive dogs that scare easily. They need a lot of praise and encouragement. They are not usually pets, but do get along with quiet, older children. Greyhounds have short, fine hair and their skin can rip easily, so owners have to be very gentle when grooming them. Because their skin isn't oily, very little dirt sticks to them and they don't have the usual doggy smell. Greyhounds are tall and muscular, range from 27 to 30 inches tall and can weigh 65 to 70 pounds. They can run up to 45 miles per hour. Greyhounds like a regular routine and are very easily trained. They have little body fat, should stay inside and during cold weather they should wear a coat. These dogs rest during the day and save their energy for running. This book is very informative about the greyhound. It has wonderful pictures as well as a glossary and a web site listing. It is a part of the "Dog Set IV" series.
