Overview

This is one of the most beautiful piano records ever made. Emil Gilels was a Russian virtuoso known for his thundering interpretations of difficult and demanding works. Here, however, he turned his attention to pieces that pose few technical challenges and that are most often played by student pianists (if at all). His sparkling yet always serious and supersensitive approach to this music shows that Grieg's aptly named Lyric Pieces are actually miniature masterpieces; each is a tiny tone painting full of fantasy, melodic charm, and disarming simplicity. Some reflect the composer's keen interest in the folk music of his native Norway, while others are tender reveries that remind us why Grieg was called "the Chopin of the North." First released back in 1974, Deutsche Grammophon's remastered sound has warmth, clarity, and a sense of atmosphere that too many newer, all-digital recordings sadly lack. Magical.

Emil Gilels' mastery of Brahms and Beethoven reveal a mastery of technical challenges and virtuosic temperament. However, it is surprising that Gilels is also skilled in revealing the simplicity behind each composer's compositions by probing the childlike grace implicit from note to note. He does it here with the Grieg Lyric Pieces. One comes away with an understanding of the intuitive insight that the pianist has when playing each piece as an organic whole. In this case the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts. This is a delightful recording.
