Overview

Mikhail Pletnev has spent so much of the past decade conducting the Russian National Orchestra that any new recording by Pletnev the pianist is something of an event. His new Grieg anthology for Deutsche Grammophon is predictably extraordinary -- perhaps the most individual album of Grieg's piano music since the collection of Lyric Pieces Emil Gilels recorded for Deutsche Grammophon a quarter-century ago. Along with the only version of the youthful E minor Sonata to stand beside Leif Ove Andsnes' superb Virgin Classics recording -- just listen to the tension and excitement Pletnev generates in the stormy opening movement -- the album features a genuine curiosity from the composer's student days: the Seven Fugues for Piano, recorded here for the first time. Contrapuntally dense and charmingly earnest, they make for a terrific "guess who wrote this?" party record, especially in a performance that possesses the same phenomenal dexterity and textural clarity that Glenn Gould brought to his Bach recordings. The recital concludes with a selection of Lyric Pieces full of charm and character, especially the capricious, Schumannesque reading of "Butterfly" and the wistful melancholy of "Vanished Days." Even those whose collections are already bursting with Grieg should make room for this wonderful newcomer.

Editorial Reviews

Gramophone
All these performances are of special calibre, at once scrupulous and sensitive. DG's sound is no less exceptional.
