Overview

The fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm are among the best-loved and most famous in all of literature. What reader is not familiar with the stories “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Snow-White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Cinderella,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Rapun- zel,” “Rumpelstiltskin,” or “Tom Thumb”? Derived from folktales that had been part of the oral storytelling tradition for centuries, these stories are acknowledged as literary landmarks that transcend their time and culture.

Grimm’s Complete Fairy Tales collects more than two hundred fairy tales set down by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in the early decades of the nineteenth century. In these wonderfully entertaining stories, frogs transform into handsome princes, serving girls become princesses, clever peasants outwit disdainful nobles, evil queens and stepmothers are revealed for the nasty folk they are, innocents learn to beware of predators, kings learn valuable lessons from their wiser servants, the poor outshine their betters, animals talk like people, virtue is rewarded, and bad behavior is punished.

Illustrated with the artwork of Arthur Rackham, Grimm’s Complete Fairy Tales is a cornucopia of magical stories that will appeal to readers of all ages.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Steeped in danger and dark enchantment and often reflecting the cruel reality of life in central Europe, the traditional tales in this volume were collected by German folklorists Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm as an act of cultural preservation, not children’s entertainment. Yet, over the years, these magical stories of princesses and witches, evil stepmothers and talking animals have thrilled and delighted countless generations of children -- who seem to agree that the best yarns are always a little scary! Included in this handsomely bound anthology with gilt-edged pages are classics like "Snow White" and "Sleeping Beauty," as well as little-known gems like "The Juniper Tree."

This bonded leather edition includes a satin page-keeper and gold-edged pages.

Meet the Author

The Brothers GrimmJacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859)—set out to make careers as lawyers, but found themselves more attracted to literature, poetry, and folktales. With the publication in 1812 of Children’s and Household Tales, a collection of folktales from the oral traditions of several countries, they became recognized as the preeminent scholars and translators of fairy and folktales.

    Gorgeous Book

This book is not only complete but very aesthetically pleasing. It is rare to find a book that has a cover and binding that shows so much craftsmanship. The ribbon bookmark is a great throwback to the old binded books. Definitely a great buy. Totally a collector's item as well as a great read.

This complete collection is beautifully bound. The book is illustrated, just not on every single page. They are scattered every few pages. If you love classic fairy tales this is definitely worth having.

These tales are not Disneyfied. These tales are intended for adult audiences. Not all are fairy tales. Some are Christian tales , while other tales are also included. Some are sad, some are strange, and punishments of the bad guys can be rather severe. At least on tale. is a bit disturbing. But an interesting read none the less. Red Ridinghood, Hansel and Gretal, Sleepybeauty, and of course Snow White are among the tales collected by The Grimm Brothers.

I can't wait to read this. I bought the boxed set with this, Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Sherlock Holmes and Illiad & Oddessy last week and I am definitely starting with Grimm. My boyfriend has been reading the Alice & Wonderland versions for a couple months now and told me about it's dark secrets. I have always been a Disney fan but I honestly wish they would have thrown in the darker sides just to make our inner demons smile. I'm excited!! I have a different series I'm reading right now but the moment I'm done....... <3
