When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm set out to collect stories in the early 1800s, their goal was not to entertain children but to preserve Germanic folklore—and the hard life of European peasants was reflected in the tales they discovered. However, once the brothers saw how the stories entranced young readers, they began softening some of the harsher aspects to make them more suitable for children.
A cornerstone of Western culture since the early 1800s, Grimm’s Fairy Tales is now beloved the world over. This collection of more than 120 of the Grimms’ best tales includes such classics as “Cinderella,” “Snow White,” “Hansel and Grethel,” “Rapunzel,” “Rumpelstiltskin,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” and “The Frog Prince,” as well as others that are no less delightful.
This new edition features beautiful full-color illustrations throughout to provide even more magic to these beloved tales.

These stories are fairly different than the softened down ones that we are usually used to. Just FYI the Grimm Brothers did not actually write the stories, they had set out to study speech and different accents. To do this they would ask people to tell them a story and these are many of the stories which they heard. They just compiled them.

My favorite story is The Juniper Tree...its a dark story that has remained with me since I first read it 13 years ago. It should definitely be checked out

I would recomend this to anyone!
Even though the stories are kind of dark, it just adds to its excellence.

i came accross this book at the B&N store that just opened near me and i couldnt wait to read it. i had yet to find a complete set of the tales of the brothers grimm. the original tales are so much more interesting than the disny versions ive grown up with. its a great book for teenagers and adults who grew up with the softened versions of these tales

I love having these stories in a collection, but the book itself is pretty bare bones inside. It also has no information on what translation is used. There are no illustration inside the book, and the cover is nice except the picture which is just bound to the front cover not engraved like the title. A good collection to have but lacks.

This is the most complete Brothers Grimm's book, but the book was a bit difficult for young children to understand. The language was too complex.

Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.A mixture of Poe and Aesop's fable may best describe the fantasies featured in the pages of this tome as they entail morality tales many of which do not shy away from bloodshed and gore that have become accepted as the norm courtesy of the Disney studios catering to political correctness and providing baby food for the masses. If this were not enjoyable enough, all these tales are collected in a single volume. At times, however, it is this very inclusiveness that works against itself as some of the stories are very much the same thus becoming repetitive while, in other instances, abrupt turns in the story line with a suddenness that proves disconcerting and confusing. This last is overshadowed by the aforementioned virtues making both the hardcover edition with a dust jacket containing liner notes (ISBN-13: 978-0-088029-519-2) and the leather bound volume (ISBN-13: 978-0-7607-0335-9) lacking the dust jacket and liner notes but, instead, having gilded pages and attached gold ribbon book mark both excellent additions to anyone's library. The Grimm Brothers were imaginative men, with their stories of far away places and things you always wanted to happento you as a child. From the beautiful princess to the gallent princes, to the evil villans and all of the things that go with them. The Grimm stories stay ture to their name they are witty but also can give you chills if you think about it. These stories are for the imaginative folk who love reading about far away places and great adventures. I would recommend this great book for teens and adults.

Love it. It's long time told stories that usually we don't hear these versions since everyone glams them up.

I have been wanting to read the complete works of the "real" fairy tale stories. This is a fantastic reading of all the Grimm's classics. Dark, gory and sometimes funny tales. The true story of Cinderella is by far the best! The stepsisters scheming and lengths they go through to get the shoe to fit are how we see the darker side of humanity.
Not recommended for elementary school aged children.

have passed the half century, but these tales are still fresh in me mind...even the apple gained a little notoriety when used by the evil queen to kill Snow White, and the mirror has to endure centuries of ceaseless questioning from less than fair and insecure females who need assurance. For those still yearning for more, try 'Malay Folkore: a contemporary retelling' for an Asian flavor of this genre.

On nights with nothing good on TV, my 14 yr old daughter and 13 yr old son ask me to read this out loud. And if I can't find the book, I can bet on searching my daughter's room. She likes that she can read a few of these short, often gruesome tales in the evening after homework. Older kids just can't get enough of these odd little stories.
