Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Steeped in danger and dark enchantment and often reflecting the cruel reality of life in central Europe, the traditional tales in this volume were collected by German folklorists Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm as an act of cultural preservation, not children’s entertainment. Yet, over the years, these magical stories of princesses and witches, evil stepmothers and talking animals have thrilled and delighted countless generations of children -- who seem to agree that the best yarns are always a little scary! Included in this handsomely bound anthology with gilt-edged pages are classics like "Snow White" and "Sleeping Beauty," as well as little-known gems like "The Juniper Tree."
From Barnes & Noble
This bonded leather edition includes a satin page-keeper and gold-edged pages.

Meet the Author

The Brothers GrimmJacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859)—set out to make careers as lawyers, but found themselves more attracted to literature, poetry, and folktales. With the publication in 1812 of Children’s and Household Tales, a collection of folktales from the oral traditions of several countries, they became recognized as the preeminent scholars and translators of fairy and folktales.

    get another version

This ebook of Grimms' Complete Fairy Tales appears to be a digitized copy. It is readable, however I found the table of contents to be useless for navigation. You can read the TOC to find the page but then you have to manually navigate to the page number. The TOC is not directly accessible via my Nook ereader. I did find several miss-spelled words in my short 5 minutes reading so I decided to delete this version and to go get another version. I will look at the non-free versions to get a copy that can be navigated using the Nook ereader controls.

    I Also Recommend:

    "Grimm's Tales" Complete Classic Collection

A mixture of Poe and Aesop's fable may best describe the fantasies featured in the pages of this tome as they entail morality tales many of which do not shy away from bloodshed and gore that have become accepted as the norm courtesy of the Disney studios catering to political correctness and providing baby food for the masses. If this were not enjoyable enough, all these tales are collected in a single volume. At times, however, it is this very inclusiveness that works against itself as some of the stories are very much the same thus becoming repetitive while, in other instances, abrupt turns in the story line with a suddenness that proves disconcerting and confusing. This last is overshadowed by the aforementioned virtues making both the hardcover edition with a dust jacket containing liner notes (ISBN-13: 978-0-088029-519-2) and the leather bound volume (ISBN-13: 978-0-7607-0335-9) lacking the dust jacket and liner notes but, instead, having gilded pages and attached gold ribbon book mark both excellent additions to anyone's library. poorly translated

This book does indeed contain the same, good old stories, but they are translated into a literal, flat english that leaves all the richness and shadow out of the stories. Highly disappointing and hardly worth reading when there are so many better versions of this collection.

    Completwly Completely Gruesome collection

Even though this has spelling errors and table of contents does not link to stories this is a complete collection of all 211 stories. It is unedited and contains punishment for the wicked. Great deal for free!

    Great Read on the classics

I have been wanting to read the complete works of the "real" fairy tale stories. This is a fantastic reading of all the Grimm's classics. Dark, gory and sometimes funny tales. The true story of Cinderella is by far the best! The stepsisters scheming and lengths they go through to get the shoe to fit are how we see the darker side of humanity.
Not recommended for elementary school aged children.

Grimm's Fairey Tales never grow old

I don't remember reading these tales as a child but now that I have decided to give it a try I am enchanted and amazed at the creativity and imagination of these stories. Each one is just long enough to be a before bedtime read. I guess this was the entertainment in the days prior to TV and Radio. Tales of fantasy and magic. And so much of it found in our lierature of today. I love it.

    A Truly Great Book

This book is priceless, in that it contains those tales that are well-known and those that are practically unheard of. Many of those that we have heard, i.e. Snow White & Rose Red, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, etc. are told in their original fashion, without having been watered down or "Disney-cized" for children and those who constantly wish for happy endings for all. I think that there is a certain sense of dimension added when these tales are left as originally told, as they were passed down through the generations. Many similarities can be seen between the Grimms' tales and those found in other collections - this is because they are a part of who we, as people are. They are culture.

    Many people

Many people don t know how dark the real grimms actully arr see im 12 andi know that i dont have anything against disney but they leave all the dark stuff out of it just for children i think they should make fairy tale movies based on the actull fairy tale and it would be better if they did not alter the movies at all . This is overall a good boook though

I can't wait to read this. I bought the boxed set with this, Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Sherlock Holmes and Illiad & Oddessy last week and I am definitely starting with Grimm. My boyfriend has been reading the Alice & Wonderland versions for a couple months now and told me about it's dark secrets. I have always been a Disney fan but I honestly wish they would have thrown in the darker sides just to make our inner demons smile. I'm excited!! I have a different series I'm reading right now but the moment I'm done....... <3
