Grimms Fairy Stories, as it is commonly known today, is originally the Childrens and Household tales which is a collection of German origin fairy tales first published in 1812 by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, the Brothers Grimm. The first volumes were much criticized because they were not regarded as suitable for children, both for the scholarly information included and the subject matter. Many changes through the editions such as turning the wicked mother of the first edition in Snow White and Hansel and Gretel to a stepmother, were probably made with an eye to such suitability. They removed sexual references, such as Rapunzels innocently asking why her dress was getting tight around her belly, and thus naively revealing her pregnancy and the prince's visits to her step mother, but, in many respects, violence, particularly when punishing villains, was increased. When I was looking at reviews to buy this book, people said it had the worst format and had many spelling errors. I decided to get the free sample and see if what they said was true. I found out that the book did not have any spelling errors that I could see, the only problem I had was that it doesn't flow as well as other books but come on! These stories are from how many years ago? This is a great read for people who like farie tales or want to know more of the Grimm tales than the ones everybody knows. If you don't believe me just get the sample!

I really like Grimm's because they're an interesting take on fairy tales. I like the Dover version because it's small and I can easily carry it to class. The only thing I have a problem with is the print, it's a little small. Other than that, I like it.

Really good fairy tales! The Brothers Grimm are good writers. It would be cool if some of the fairy tales were real life.

this was a great book to read as a class and do exercises and questions at the end of each story in the book. Doing those exercises with the book help you understand how to analize things.

The Brothers Grimm have a mastery of the written art and a plethora of their works are demonstrated in this extensive book full of their many stories. None of the stories are very long, which allows the reader to come and go as he pleases without worrying about forgetting key details. Although these stories are short, many maintain a sense of humor that is bordering cynical. With various stories that all have one common factor that the happy ending might not happen, these series of books will keep you on your toes as well ass amuse and entertain you.

There are no pictures; it's a no-frills book. The formatting is odd. The stories themselves are awesome. It's great for reading aloud. My 8 & 11 yr olds love to hear them.

Noel Pocock is literally one of the worst choices of illustrator for this otherwise beautifully presented book. What a shame. Why, oh, why would you waste pages of beautiful colored ink on Noel Pocock? He was a B-level 'boy's book' illustrator, and his style is sorely lacking-- having none of the haunting beauty, clever detail, or downright magic that is present in the best illustrators of these German fairy tales. It's so pretty, and then it's so disappointing to meet Pocock's artwork instead of Menerheim or Offterdinger or countless others. Note that the cover art is not Pocock. Pocock never drew Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty or Rapunzel. He is boring. Boring. Boring.

A sweet and cute book. I really like the mix of textures (leather bond, gold and silver and the shinny image on the center of the cover) Paint does'n come off. Definitely worth the price. Don't hesitate, this book is gorgeous!

Barnes and Noble, please stop putting new covers on the leatherbound classics that you have already released. It is a waste since there are so many other books you could release in this form. Here are some titles I would love to see. The Brothers Karamazov The Lord of the Rings The Hobbit Middlemarch 1984 and Animal Farm The Chronicles of Prydain
