Grind With Purpose: A Faith-Fueled Playbook for Athletes
Every athlete wants to win—but few are willing to embrace what it actually takes. Real greatness isn't handed out with trophies or scholarships. It's forged in fire—in the early mornings, the lonely practices, the painful losses, and the unseen grind. This book is for the athletes who are hungry. Hungry to grow. Hungry to fight. Hungry to become something more than just good. This is for the ones who know they were made to be winners and willing to put in the work, grind with purpose isn't about hype—it's about heart. It's about owning your mindset, grinding with purpose, and developing the type of toughness that outlasts talent. Inside these pages, you'll find practical strategies to train your body, mind, and spirit. Each module includes a story from my journey, a quote from champions who've been there, and a challenge to push you toward becoming the best version of yourself. My story starts as a walk-on at Oral Roberts University. I wasn't the biggest name, the fastest recruit, or the most gifted athlete. But I had grit. I had faith. And I had a relentless work ethic. I earned my way onto the floor and eventually became the team captain, playing under Hall of Fame Coach Bill Self. He pushed me harder than I thought I could handle—and I'm forever better for it. What I learned in that locker room, weight room, and prayer room still drives me today.

About the Author

Born in New York City and raised in Boston from the age of 11, James embodies the authenticity and strong opinions that city life demands. After high school, he moved to Oklahoma to play Division I basketball at Oral Roberts University, where he earned the role of team captain in his senior year. A lifelong sports enthusiast, James excelled in baseball, basketball, and football in high school and even received offers to play professional basketball overseas.

In his household, one rule is non-negotiable: no one roots for the Yankees, Lakers, or Dallas Cowboys.

With a deep faith in God, James is passionate about discussing scripture and engaging in meaningful conversations about religion. He never shies away from a spirited debate, always eager to explore the deeper aspects of faith.

James's commitment to empowering young people is evident in his career. With over a decade of experience as a high school teacher and basketball coach, he now runs a basketball skills school, continuing to mentor and inspire the next generation of athletes. He also dedicated 15 years to youth and adult ministry, including six years planting a church in Boston before relocating to Tulsa, where he now resides.

James is a devoted husband to Sarah and a proud father of four, with his oldest child now following in his footsteps by playing basketball at ORU.
