Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Strange things have been happening in Fablehaven. A mysterious shadow plague is slowly overtaking the once peaceful magical creatures that live there. The nipsies are like regular people except they are only about half an inch big. Some of their kingdoms have recently been attacked by other nipsies who have somehow been transformed into sinister beings. Seth is the first to discover the disturbing changes. He and his sister Kendra have been staying with their grandparents at Fablehaven. Kendra has unique abilities that can possibly help, but the situation is extremely dangerous. Kendra's grandparents reluctantly grant her permission to visit a special place where she is inducted into the Knights of the Dawn. She and several other knights immediately begin an assignment to retrieve a hidden artifact. They must find it before the Society of the Evening Star does or more evil may be released. Are Kendra and the Knights powerful enough to stop this frightening spread of evil? And who is responsible for creating this havoc? No one can be trusted as Kendra and the Knights embark on a daring journey where they encounter dragons, mystical creatures, and mirages. This gripping novel takes readers on a journey into an exciting and magical world where the forces of good and evil battle. It is Book Three in the "Fablehaven" series. Reviewer: Denise Daley

    Transfixing

Usually, when people tell me a book was so good they couldn't put it down I just roll my eyes and think 'Yeah, whatever. Since when has there been a book like that?' Now I know: Since Grip of the Shadow Plague. I got really annoyed when I was told that I had to put the book away and do something else for awhile. I haven't felt like this about a book since Jacques's masterpiece, High Rhulain! If you can't get enough of suspense and fantasy you will LOVE this book!

    Good Book

Once again Mull has created another good story. I actually liked this one better than the last. It was easier to get involved with the story and characters and feel like you were right there with them. This book keep you engrossed and there were very few 'down times'. Would highly recommend this series and this book to young or old. It's just fun.

    A Great Series!

Fablehaven is by far the most entertaining kids' series I have read since Harry Potter. Each book is as enjoyable as the last, and the story just keeps getting better. I find that the more I read about Fablehaven, the more I want to know about the place...Overall, Fablehaven is an excellent read that will leave you eager for more!

This series is great for both adults and children! If you enjoyed Fablehaven, you might also like the "Percy Jackson" series by Rick Riordan.

The series just gets better and better!

The third installment in the Fablehaven series picks right up where the second book left off. The action is instant and continues throughout. The character development is ramped up as well. The plot of the third book follow the results of what occured in the second book and has the antagonists fighting a demon, a phantom, and time. The final battle at the end of the story is epic. A great read.

"I am a 6th Grade Student in Glendale, AZ"

The book, Fablehaven: Grip of the Shadow Plague by Brandon Mull was an extremely satisfying book. There were many main characters in this book, but I focused on the most important characters. One is Kendra; she is a brave and very bright teenager, she does whatever she can to save her family and she is very cautious. Her brother, Seth is almost an opposite of Kendra. He is still brave but he isn't the smartest person around. Seth also can't seem to stay out of trouble he is irresponsible and ignorant. Lena is another. She is a very nice and graceful person. She was a former naiad, which is a creature that loves to drown people; she was also brave enough to sacrifice her life to save Fablehaven. Patton Burgess is Lena's husband. He is also a young, handsome and strong man. The plot is that Kendra and Seth need to cure a horrible plague that can slowly overcome Fablehaven. The plague was first discovered by the nipsies', little creatures who love shiny items or artifacts. The plague has the power to turn humans into shadow figures, which make the person who was overcome by the plague, intend to do bad things. Later they find out that Ephira, a former wood dryad who was consumed by shadows. She then became the cause of the plague. Now Kendra needs to touch a specific pebble, which is empowered with light on a nail that is embedded to a tree, which will eradicate the plague. This book's setting is in Fablehaven during August. The theme of this fantastic tale is to be brave and to not be afraid of taking a risk for your family or loved ones. I love this book because it had great word choice and really descriptive adjectives, along with the great storyline. This book can be connected to the world because people would try to cure a disease if it was a threat to mankind. People would also risk their lives if it saved their family or friends. I would recommend Fablehaven, and Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star.

Reviewed by Joan Stradling for TeensReadToo.com

A horrible plague is transforming light creatures into beings of darkness at Fablehaven.

Seth discovers the source of the problem, but the Sorenson's can't find a way to stop it. With nowhere to turn, the caretakers of Fablehaven must choose between the Sphinx who might be a traitor, and Vanessa, who they've put in the quiet box because she can't be trusted.

In spite of the trouble at Fablehaven, Kendra and other Knights of the Dawn must travel to Lost Mesa (another secret preserve) and try to recover one of the hidden artifacts before The Society of the Evening Star gets their hands on it.

The GRIP OF THE SHADOW PLAGUE shares more detail and insight to the goings on in this series, but doesn't reveal all. New and interesting characters are introduced while still moving forward with stories/subplots of characters introduced in previous novels.

I can't recommend this series highly enough. The world is amazing, the characters are intriguing, and the secrets keep the reader guessing! Mull reveals just enough to placate the reader's curiosity, but still leaves a dangling carrot or two.

I can't wait to learn the SECRETS OF THE DRAGON SANCTUARY!

Brandon Mull draws the reader into the story and its hard to put it down until the last words are read.

It was a good read and I would encourage all ages to read not only this book but also the others in the series. They pull you in and its hard to put the book down. There are many twists and turns in the story and it is enjoyable to attempt to figure out the next series of events. It is not so easy to figure out the next twist and turn that the reader looses interest. Each new chapter brings new adventure and unforeseen events that keep your interest in discovering what will be the newest plot development.

    Fable-riffic!

This series was absolutely wonderful. The character, the creatures, the plot, everything! I couldn't put them down. Any teenager will like the book as it has self-discovery for the characters but mixed with tons of adventure and emotional feedback. For me it was a quick read but I wish there could have been more so I could keep going. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who needs a good fantasy world every once in awhile.

    And the plot thickens!

I must say that I am glued to this series. I didn't hear about the series until the first four books were out and I'm glad because then I didn't have to wait so long in between each book. This one draws much more complexity into the story line and continues to engage the reader with twists and turns that were most definitely unanticipated. The ending is nearly a tear-jerker, but there still looms hope somewhere in the distance. My wife is finishing the last two chapters now (after getting it back from me as I keep stealing quick moments to relive the adventures) and she is nearly as engrossed in them as I am!

    I love Brandon Mull

From book 1 until book 5, I could not put them down. When I first started reading them book 1 & 2 were already out and I couldn't wait for the next one to come out, then the next and then the next. You feel the characters. This is not a children's book but geared more to late teens and up. If you love dragons, fairy-tail animals, you will love these books. Their are a lot of deaths in these books but you will still love the book. My daughter got me started and we are both hooked. We had to get the hard back ones, because we couldn't wait for the paper backs to come out!

    A fun read

Brandon Mull continues his writing magic in Fablehaven: Grip of the Shadow Plague and continues revealing more of his fantastic, imaginative world.

The strength of this book is how Mull manages to continue the storyline, add mystery, expand answers to previously vague issues mentioned in the preceding two books, introduce interesting new characters and continues to develop previous ones.

Although the book starts out a little slow it more than makes up for it once the storyline picks up.

This series continues to entertain and enthrall. I highly recommend it to those who enjoy the genre.
