Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6-10Outstanding quality, full-color photos accompany a readable, accurate text that describes the origin, life cycle, and possible future of Ursus arctos horribilis on the North American continent. Huge, powerful, and potentially explosive in temperament, grizzlies demand caution and respect from humans, and Turbak devotes a chapter to "Close Encounters of the Ursine Kind," including some basic "thou shalt not's" that may save hikers' and campers' lives. The conversational text makes for pleasurable reading, and an index assures quick access to specific facts for researchers in too much of a hurry to "smell the roses." Historical range maps, a fact page, and some recommended readings (all adult titles) are also included. Collections already owning Michio Hoshino's The Grizzly Bear Family Book (North-South, 1994), Dorothy Hinshaw Patent's The Way of the Grizzly (Clarion, 1991), and Lynn Stone's Grizzlies (Carolrhoda, 1993) may not need this title; but Turbak's up-to-date data and lively style (and those eye-catching photos) make it worthy of consideration.Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY
