Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lynn O'Connell
The grizzly bear has a highly attuned sense of smell, great hearing with ears on the top of the head, night vision capability, and fur which blends easily into the woods. All of these features combine to make the grizzly bear one of the best hunters in North America. This forty page book is filled with facts as well as great photography. Readers will see photos of the male grizzly bear, weighing in at 1,000 pounds, which is the largest predator in North America. Other photos show the cubs, each about the size of a soft-drink can at birth. Another photo shows a mother grizzly, weighing in at about 500 pounds, racing through the forest at thirty-five miles an hour. The eating habits of grizzly bears as well as their hibernation schedule are explained simply. Author Sandra Markle is a former elementary school science teacher and her book works well for young readers. This book is part of her "Animal Predators" series, which has been named in the "Top 10 Youth Nonfiction Series" by Booklist. In the book's appendix, the reader is given information about books and websites to learn more about the grizzly bear. Reviewer: Lynn O'Connell
