Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
There are a batch of books on The GIMP, but few are as sophisticated as Grokking The GIMP. Carey Bunks studiously avoids both the "everything-but-the-kitchen-sink" and "zillions of random tips and tricks" approaches. Instead, he offers a truly in-depth understanding of digital image manipulation — and then shows you how to get results with The GIMP. You won't learn about all of The GIMP's 300 functions and filters here: you'll learn which are the right ones to use, and why.

Bunks starts by giving you an excellent grounding in using layers, selections, and masks — crucial concepts that many books fail to explain well, and many users never fully master. Bunks is a professional scientist whose research interests include colorspaces, and he offers in-depth insight into the subject — including aspects of color theory you'll find invaluable if you're creating web graphics, and how to make the most of The GIMP's blending modes.

There are detailed techniques for photo touchup and enhancement — including some great ideas for using the GIMP's powerful Curves feature, Unsharp Mask, and the Clone tool. You'll find detailed coverage of compositing, collage, and photo montage; as well as a chapter on The GIMP's tools for creating animated GIFs, image maps, and other web graphics. Simply put, GROKKING THE GIMP is impressive.

    gimp grok'd

With my short patience, I couldn't penetrate the gimp's bizarre model of selections, masks, layers, and channels. After reading your book, I feel much more comfortable. It still seems strange and mysterious, but I was able to construct a multi-layer image without too much head scratching.
