Overview

Iss Harlow's marriage in high life London, 1823

A handsome duke. His beautiful soon-to-be duchess. A whirlwind courtship. It is this author's privilege to report on the event all of London is talking about: the upcoming wedding of the Duke of Hamilton and Brandon to the only daughter of the Duke of Richmond. Every detail of the "Wedding of the Year" will be reported in these pages as a London Weekly exclusive.

But I, Miss Sophie Harlow, must confess to a secret infatuation with this "double duke" that can only lead to trouble. It is impossible that this notoriously upstanding gentleman would ever jilt his bride for a scandalous female newspaper writer. And yet . . . the arrival of a foreign prince, the discovery of a shocking secret, and one passionate kiss could change everything. Will this perfect duke risk the scandal of the year to marry the woman his heart desires?

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
The twisting paths of love and duty collide in this engrossing and lively romance introducing Miss Sophie Harlow, a journalist whose column has taken 19th-century London by storm. Sophie, herself recently jilted at the altar, has reluctantly taken on the newspaper’s task of writing about weddings, and is invited to cover the marriage of the handsome “double duke” of Brandon and Hamilton to Lady Clarissa Richmond. The moment Brandon and Sophie lay eyes on each other, the chemistry is undeniable. But Brandon’s reputation as a truly good man, coupled with Sophie’s regard for Clarissa, conflict with their deepening desires. Meanwhile, Lady Clarissa’s mother will stop at nothing to see the wedding through, despite her daughter’s sudden attachment to the Prince of Bavaria (it’s mutual). As the wedding day draws neigh, schemes are unleashed and bonds are broken. With wonderfully drawn characters, intrigue, and tantalizing passion, Rodale (The Rogue and the Rival) is certain to delight readers and keep them waiting, with baited breath, for more. (June)

    I Also Recommend:

Boring story, terrible characters, don't waste your money!

I read a lot of regency romance. I love the time period and I love a good love story. This is not one. The characters have no real personalities, the story was unrealistic and frankly boring. She repeated the same problem over and over again. The characters were in love after he saved her from being hit by a carriage and they went for a walk after?? What? It was stupid. Even that I could put aside but it wasn't a cute story. The characters were two-dimensional and I couldn't really see what the attraction was between them because there was nothing about them I really knew. Besides he was a duke and had responsibilities and she was a writer and therefore scandalous. That is it! There are so many great authors out there who write characters who are well-rounded and love stories that are sweet and funny. I thought the concept for this had so much potential, but this fell short! Read something else, I promise this will disappoint.

    Honor or Action?

Honor or action? I choose action!

Historical romances are a favorite of mine and this book fell perfectly into that genre.

I truly enjoyed this book. I finished reading at 3:45 am (I had work in the morning). I couldn't put it down!

A Groom of One's Own is the first novel by Rodale I've read and

A Groom of One's Own is the first novel by Rodale I've read and I adored it. It was like having a mini-vacation every time I opened it up.

It's a pretty straightforward set-up: Sophie Harlowe gets jilted at the altar, finds work in London writing about weddings for a tabloid, falls for a duke whose wedding preparations she's covering for the paper, and shenanigans ensue. But Sophie is adorable, the duke is incredibly appealing, and the shenanigans are delivered with such sublimely dry wit, I enjoyed every moment of it. A secondary romance between the duke's betrothed and a fabulously romantic foreign prince adds to the fun. Rodale has a light touch and wonderful comic timing. Also, Sophie and her duke's kisses are some of the most delectable I've read in historical romance novels. The moment I finished the book I ordered the next two in the series.

Recommended for those who like fun in their romance

This book is definitely for the Romance genre. It's filled with romantic tension and leads you on a merry chase to the end. You can hardly wait to see if love can overcome the honor of a duke. Not for a book club but delightful reading. Check out other books by this author.

a screwball comedy of errors that feels like combing Sheridan's The School for Scandal with a 1930s madcap movie

In 1822 at the church in Buckinghamshire, the man she is engaged to marry Matthew Fletcher breaks off their relationship saying marriage is a commitment. Stunned, Sophie Harlow writes off marriage. Thus it is ironic because one year after her disavowal of marital bliss and her fall from grace, she obtains a position as one of the four Writing Girls; her column is Miss Harlow's Marriage in High Life for the London Weekly.

For the Weekly, Sophie covers the wedding of the Duke of Hamilton Brandon to Lady Clarissa, daughter of the Duke of Richmond. She would like to beg off because she is very attracted to the groom, but must attend if she is to keep her job. To her amazement the Duke appears to want her and to both their shock, the bride seems more interested in a foreign prince. However, the quartet is all honorable people so no one will take that critical first step to disentangle the wrong pairings into the loving relationships.

The first Writing Girl's Regency romance is a screwball comedy of errors that feels like combing Sheridan's The School for Scandal with a 1930s madcap movie inside a regency romance. The story line is fast-paced throughout as the quartet dance to love but with the wrong partners. Maya Rodale provides a wonderfully zany historical with three other Writing Girls to go.
