Children's LiteratureDo you enjoy learning about the grosser aspects of your body? If so, this is the book for you. This wonderful encyclopedia of disgusting body facts pulls no punches when explaining exactly how and why our bodies function as they do. Organized into three different sections (Slimy, Mushy, Oozy Gross Things; Crusty, Scaly, Gross Things; and Stinky, Smelly Gross Things), subjects from barfing to boogers to poop to farts, burps, and dandruff are covered in this book. While examining each subject, the reader will learn why each bodily function is necessary through both the detailed descriptions and the fun, cartoon-like illustrations. The illustrations are completely necessary to give the reader a full and meaningful understanding of the functions explained within the book. In addition, explanations of functions help the reader understand how each takes place. At many points throughout the book, the author inserts fun facts about the function at hand. For example, in the poop section, there is a story about King Louis XIV and the conferences that he held upon his royal "throne." This is a very informative book for those with strong stomachs, and it will definitely appeal to any child with a sense of lavatorial humor. The book gives a detailed look into the darker side of the body's everyday processes that make it possible to live. If the disgusting nature turns you off immediately, take the book's advice and remember: it's not just gross... it's Grossology! 2002, Penguin Putnam Books, Ages 9 to 12.
