Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
His ``eighth set of seven years/ completed, my ninth beginning,'' Duncan's new poems speak directly about childhood. At last he appears to have successfully reconciled the emotional (which for him is autobiographical) with the intellectual. He can even note that ``Baudelaire, Nietszche, Swift/ are not eased into death,'' then go on to praise death's splendor. Duncan's ability to describe and transform physical details is at its best, but this volume is not for the weak-kneed. Poems dating from 1981 and 1982 confirm Duncan's insistence upon not rushing things into print, even when he senses the end of his life approaching.
