Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leigh Geiger
From the "Move & Get Healthy" series which emphasizes the importance of good nutrition, especially through a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, this series combines both the new USDA "My Plate Guidelines" and First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move!" campaign. This title opens with an introduction to healthy eating which advises readers that 50% of each meal should come from fruits and vegetables. Readers are invited to consider growing their own nutritious crops. The author does an excellent job of covering all of the basic information that a pre-school or early primary school-aged child would need to start a small garden. It includes directions for testing the soil, selecting seeds or plants to start the garden, planting, watering, fertilizing and weeding the growing crops. Suggestions and illustrations include city, urban and suburban settings. However, there is only a very brief mention of pests and how to deal with them. Even in urban settings, birds, insects and small animals are known to ruin even well-tended gardens. Suburban and urban gardens will suffer from larger predators as well. Reviewer: Leigh Geiger, Ph.D.
