Gr 2-4-Well-reproduced color photographs and clear, concise writing introduce the concept. Careful explanations and diagrams illustrate the regular, orderly arrangement of atoms that form crystalline shapes. Readers are challenged to identify crystals such as salt, sugar, and snow, and to recognize things that look like crystal and are not, such as glass. The formation of crystals is also discussed. The book concludes with two experiments that include safety precautions. Errors in the final section may hinder those attempting "To Find Out More." Similar material is covered more briefly in Roy Gallant's Minerals (Benchmark, 2000).-Kathryn Kosiorek, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Brooklyn, OH Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

I was buying this as a Christmas gift for my 2nd grade nephew. Be forewarned. It's more of a glossy pamphlet than a book. I was expecting a little more for my money. Had to find something a little more 'substantial' to wrap.
