Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
There is more to desert gardening than cactus and rocks, as readers will discover when they open the pages of Hodoba's book. The author, the owner of a native plant nursery in New Mexico and past president of the New Mexico chapter of the Native Plant Society, draws upon the flora of the Chihuahuan desert region and offers gardeners a plethora of plants to choose from. Hodoba discusses designing desert gardens, propagation of desert plants, and growing desert plants under nondesert conditions. The heart of his book, however, is a desert-plant encyclopedia that gives information on a plant's physical description, location, and range in the wild, plus instructions on planting and care, with photographs (not seen) and line drawings of the plants. While there is some overlap with Mary Rose Duffield's Plants for Dry Climates (H.P. Books, 1992) and Judith Phillips's Southwestern Landscaping with Native Plants (Museum of New Mexico Pr., 1987), Hodoba's work belongs on the shelves of libraries in the desert Southwest as well as libraries in other areas with strong gardening collections.-John Charles, Scottsdale P.L., Ariz.
