Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Laura Panter
Fifteen-year-old Tavin has experienced more tragic events than any teenager should. Tavin's mother is killed in a fire and his father disappears attempting to bring her back from the dead. Tavin and his sister, Moreanna, are left to rely on each other and their unnatural physic connection when Moreanna falls mysteriously ill. Desperate to save Moreanna from death, Tavin travels to his grandparent's farm to find answers to the strange occurrences in his life. What Tavin learns about his family's hidden history defies logic. He suddenly finds himself crossing back and forth to a parallel world known as the Shadowlands—a world rife with fairies, magical creatures, and monsters. In his quest to cure Moreanna, Tavin breaks the Shadowlands rules, unleashing war between the worlds and causing chaos to the fragile, centuries-old order. Tavin battles for his and Moreanna's lives as he falls in love with Princess Aria and discovers his own elemental powers can be treacherous to Moreanna's survival. Gosling's attempt to create an engrossing fantasy is marred by one-dimensional characters, stilted dialogue and jarring shifts between Tavin's and Aria's points of view. Although Tavin is only fifteen, his reactions and musings are those of someone older. Aria is portrayed as charismatic and rebellious, yet readers will be disappointed by the lack of character development. Action scenes are thrilling, but quickly resolved. More dramatic situations quickly present themselves until the cycle of climaxes and resolutions becomes exhausting. The Guardian is book one in a projected series and this reviewer hopes the second book offers better developed plot lines and characters. Reviewer: Laura Panter

    Engaging read, great characters

Engaging read, great characters and a fabulous moral to the story. Somewhat reminicent of CS Lewis. Love the twist at the end but won't say anymore about it. No spoilers here.
