THEY’D DO ANYTHING FOR COUNTRY.

AND EVERYTHING FOR EACH OTHER.

After a dark ops malfunction, Major David Berg finds himself dead center in a military trial. It’s a race against time to root out the truth, and Major Sophie Campbell isn’t making that any easier. The hot JAG wants to bring down David’s unit and fast. His testimony is crucial to winning a case that will make her career. All Sophie has to do is ignore this witness’s unflappable charm, his unnerving good looks, and a strong, solid presence that commands her attention.

It’s not easy for David, either. His attraction to this take-charge beauty is turning him inside out. But these adversaries have more in common than secret, mutual desire. There’s a traitor somewhere in the dark ops and now, to find him, David and Sophie must work together—relentlessly, tirelessly, and so intimately it could be damn near fatal.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Mann’s fifth Dark Ops novel (after Protector) pits two army majors against each other in a military court. Maj. David Berg is adamant that his men aren’t responsible for the tragic misfiring of a firearm into a private home, an incident that cost a young boy the use of his legs. Maj. Sophie Campbell wants justice for the boy, and she doesn’t care how deep she has to dig or whose career she has to torpedo to get it. When Sophie and David square off, sparks fly. Both are single parents struggling to balance their demanding careers with their children’s needs, and they’re clearly destined for each other. As David, sure of his unit’s innocence, offers to help Sophie uncover the real cause of the malfunction, the shadowy perpetrator plans several bizarre incidents to scare Sophie off the investigation. The lovebirds soon overcome their few weak and contrived excuses for not getting involved, leading to a predictable wrapup. Agent: Barbara Collins Rosenberg, the Rosenberg Group. (Sept.)

I loved the guardian by Catherine Mann. I've been reading her military romances for years. It a true feel good happy ending romance. Major David Berg and JAG officer Major Sophie Campbell are on opposing sides of a conflict. They decide to work together to find out answers on whether it was an equipment failure or or one of his mens failures. As they work together, the single parents find much in common including the neighborhood they both live in, to the children already being friends. As they continue the investigation mysteries deepen and lives are in peril.  This continuation of Mann's Dark Op series is an entertaining and suspenseful read. I look forward to future books.

I have read a few of Catherine’s books, and loved each one and this is absolutely no exception. I did not want to put this book down.I felt drawn into the dialogue wanting to know what would happen next and found myself rooting for the hero and heroine. Major Sophie Campbell is a lawyer determined to find out the truth to an incident that harmed a civilian child when no one will take the blame for it. Winning this case will surely help the child, but it will also destroy the reputation of a pilot with a spotless record. She has no time for a relationship, but boy does she get all hot and bothered when she sees Major David Berg, and she will do anything in her power to try to avoid those feelings. Which is going to be very hard for her to do when he is called to the stand as a witness. Major David Berg is the director in charge of the unit that was testing a gun mount system in a few of their aircrafts. He knows that his pilot did nothing to cause the gun to malfunction, but cannot figure out what caused it to discharge on its own. He has had feelings for Sophie for quite a while, so when things start putting her in danger he cannot sit back a watch. He decides to offer Sophie his help with the case and protection. They agree to work together to find out the truth no matter what the results may be. As they try to find answers it’s getting harder to keep their feelings to themselves and things start heating up between them. As they get closer to finding out the truth there is someone that does not want it known and will stop at nothing to keep it buried, even murder. Can Sophie and David find out who is behind this horrible incident? Will they both have a second chance at love before it’s too late? Or will someone put a stop to it all before it really starts. I received this book from the author for free in exchange for an honest review.
