Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Erin Pelletier
Part of the "Super DC Heroes" series of chapter books, this book tells the story of the Green Lantern. Alien Abin Sur from the planet Ungara is coming to the end of his journey to Earth. He has been mortally wounded from a confrontation with an outlaw starship in space. He is a member of the Green Lantern Corps and must reach his chosen replacement, earthling Hal Jordan, before it is too late. Hal, completely unaware of the Green Lantern Corp's existence, meets the dying alien when the airplane he was piloting nearly collides with the alien's aircraft. When Hal approaches the spaceship, Abin Sur gives him the Green Lantern ring, making him the Guardian of the Earth. Chapter book readers that follow DC comic characters and the Green Lantern will enjoy this book. The text is more difficult than an early chapter book with fewer illustrations. One full-page color illustration flanks the beginning and end of each seven page chapter. Loud action words are also illustrated bringing color onto each page. More complex vocabulary and some minor violence and conflict make this a good read for an older chapter book audience. Reviewer: Erin Pelletier
