Overview

This wonderfully unique collaboration brings together two masters of their fields, joining original words by spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle with delightful illustrations by Patrick McDonnell, the creator of the acclaimed comic strip MUTTS. Every heartwarming page provokes thought, insight, and smiling reverence for all beings and each moment.

More than a collection of witty and charming drawings, the marriage of Patrick McDonnell's art and Eckhart Tolle's words conveys a profound love of nature, of animals, of humans, of all life-forms. Guardians of Being celebrates and reminds us of not only the oneness of all life but also the wonder and joy to be found in the present moment, amid the beauty we sometimes forget to notice all around us.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
This book enjoyed the best possible birth: It came into being because an artist discovered his affinity with an author. When "MUTTS" cartoonist Patrick McDonnell (The Gift of Nothing; Hug Time) chanced upon Eckhart Tolle's writings, he realized almost instantly that he wanted to collaborate with him. The resulting project displays the gifts of both the spiritual teacher and thought-provoking comics illustrator.

Meet the Author

Eckhart Tolle
Eckhart Tolle is a renowned contemporary spiritual counselor and bestselling self-help author. At the core of his simple yet profound teachings lies the transformation of consciousness, a spiritual awakening that he sees as the next step in human evolution.

Biography

Eckhart Tolle was born in Germany in 1948. He spent his teenage years living with his father in Spain, then moved in his early 20s to England where he attended the Universities of London and Cambridge. Following a period of intense personal crisis, he underwent a profound spiritual awakening at the age of 29. He embarked on a long, transformative inner journey that effectively dissolved his old identity and changed the course of his life. Today he is recognized as a great spiritual counselor and an author of inspirational self-help guides. He remains unaffiliated with any organized religion or specific philosophical tradition.

In his first book, The Power of Now (1999), Tolle stressed the importance of living, fully present, in the moment. His powerful message of active self-awareness resonated with millions of readers -- including kingmaker Oprah Winfrey -- and launched a range of related literature and teaching materials. In 2008, Winfrey selected another Tolle title, A New Earth, for her influential Book Club, joining the author for an online workshop. A sought-after public speaker, Tolle travels extensively, taking his teachings throughout the world.

This book makes a wonderful gift especially to someone who likes to read. I gave it to my daughter for her 16th birthday. Makes you enjoy the little things in life!

    DOG IS MY CO-PILOT

For dog lovers, spiritually-awakened folks, or those that fall into both categories, this book is for you. Eckhart Tolle's words combine with Patrick McDonnell's illustrations and serve up a feel-good message. We love our domestic animals so much because they simply live in the moment and live life, just "being." Spiritually complex, yet simple in its design, this brilliant book should be on your bedside table or a place where you can reference it again and again and charge your spiritual batteries.

Perfect Combination of form and content

Anyone who is familiar with the wisdom and insight of Eckart Tolle (The Power Of Now) and the wonderful whimsy of the cartoons and drawings of Patrick McDonnell from his Mutts cartoon strip will instantly recognize the genius of putting them together in one book. I gave out about ten copies of this book as Christmas presents and each recipient expressed absolute delight with it. While somewhat Eastern in philosophy it is totally accessible by anyone who seeks a simpler gentler view of life and it is a book to cherish forever for anyone of any age who understands the undefinable joy of animal companionship. You will feel both peaceful and inspired after reading this book and it is wonderful to share with young people.

    Something to think about.

As expected, the drawings of McDonnell are fantastic. Moving and expressive, with or without words. He never misses his message applying Tolle's philosophy. I finished the book in one sitting, but will surely go back from time to time. It is not a book to read and finish. It's purpose is to constantly guide the reader through life, respecting their pets and all animals they'll share it with.

    Gentle reminders

This appealed to me as a gifting book. Eckhart Tolle's words with Patrick McDonnell's illustration. It didn't fail as a good gift. Just nice gentle reminders of things we need to remember in life to find quiet.

    Regretted purchase

I purchased this for my Nook. The printing on my issue was so faded I could barely read it. I have read many books about how our pets touch are lives.......was not impressed with this whimsical version.
