Alec Lambert was born to lead. He’s a ruling Elder of The Brethren, possessing steely confidence, natural smarts, and decisive problem solving abilities . . . and he’s not too bad on the eyes, either. Everything in his life has gone exactly according to plan—until the night of Brahm Hill. Alec loses his best friend at the hands of the uncle he trusted like a father, along with his previously unshakable faith to lead those with whom he’s charged. Despite this, he continues to press ahead, and for his next assignment he’s asked to protect a very beautiful but very clumsy Dhampir who’s being hunted by a powerful warlock. Suddenly, he finds his whole Brethren world is turned upside down . . . and he finds himself harboring a desire for her he can’t explain.
Poppy Honeywell knows she’s far from perfect. Bad things tend to happen when she’s around. She’s more than a little clumsy, with a phobia or two mixed in. Not to mention that her name is certainly unusual. But she doesn’t have time to worry about all that because she’s on the run and not about to back down from the arrogant Elder who’s just been assigned as her protector, claiming he has all the answers to her problems. The real problem, though, is . . . she’s irresistably drawn to this man who faces constant danger and takes charge so naturally. But Poppy also sees that taking charge of others helps Alec mask his own very deep pain.
Will Alec find his way out of the darkness and admit his feelings for Poppy before the warlock chasing her catches up to them both?

Not having read the first book in the Men of Brahm Hill series I didn't know what to expect. It was easy to get caught up in this world and what I ultimately got was an exciting read with enticing characters and an intriguing hierarchy of paranormal creatures. From start to finish I was caught up in the heartbreak of a leader carrying around unrelenting guilt and the unexpected woman who brings joy to his life while dealing with her own issues. Alec has been in a fog of duty since his uncle went to the dark side helming an army against him and killing his best friend. He's closed off his heart and devotes himself to work so others won't get hurt, but the strain is starting to show When another Elder asks him to protect the young woman he considers a daughter though life will never be the same for him again. He longs to protect her and keep her safe and enjoys their verbal sparring that brings excitement to his life.He learns to care again about the living and the future as opposed to dwelling on the past.Just when their HEA looks to be within reach fate steps in in a game-changing moment and turns him into something more than human and spells big change for the series.Alec is a super sexy alpha male who kept his true feelings buried behind a facade of seriousness.Being around Poppy showed a super sexy carefree man with the weight of the world not as burdening as before and had me drooling over him from start to finish. Poppy has lived a life on the run with a witch of intense evil constantly on her trail. It made for a solitary existence with very few relationships. After watching everyone she cared about be hurt she became convinced she was cursed which is further demonstrated by her unrelenting clumsiness. This led to many humorous moments but also frustration in her beliefs that made her seem immature. As a Dhamphir I had hoped for a powerful heroine, but it's not until halfway through the book that she starts embracing her paranormal half through training.Though the sexual tension is obvious between her and Alec from the very beginning theirs is a rocky relationship where she wants feelings and he just wants sex.The longer they're together though the more his barriers come down, but just when they're at their happiest Poppy's single act changes everything and puts her on a collision course with the witch wanting her dead.Poppy's a likable character for the most part and it was a satisfying journey watching her come out of her shell. She luckily had a great support system that made her battle with destiny an exciting one. The relationship between Alec and Poppy evolved quickly but was full of sexual tension and a sensual tug of war as Alec was hard to resist. There were numerous hot and heavy sexual encounters which fans of erotic reads will enjoy and that were nicely spaced throughout the story. Along with a strong main couple there were a slew of immensely likable secondary characters that caught my attention. The sweet yet lonely Maya who still pines for her lost love Phinneas made my heart ache and the hope presented to her throughout this story also points to intrigue for the next installment.Readers get reintroduced to the powerful and sexy shifter Kane who can be counted on to bring humor to the scene and surprising support for someone who appears so flippant.Issues involving soldiers created through nefarious means also left me intrigued as their story promises heartbreak as well. All in all a satisfying paranormal read.
(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to author Christine Wenrick. So sorry this review isn’t more positive!) Alec is asked to look after a girl called Poppy, because Joseph believes that her life may be in danger. Can Alec keep Poppy safe? And can he keep his hands to himself whilst doing it? This was an okay story, but I just didn’t like Alec. I have to say that I can remember not liking Alec in the previous books by this author. His behaviour towards Olivia and Caleb was awful, and it put me off him, not to mention how arrogant he was. I hoped that in this book I would grow to like him, but unfortunately it didn’t happen quick. I didn’t start to actually like Alec until three quarters of the way through the book, and even then I didn’t like him that much. Poppy was a bit of a difficult character for me to connect with as well, she made some really silly decisions, was a bit naïve, and rushed head-first into things without thinking. Considering that people were trying to protect her and keep her safe, she really didn’t make it easy for them. I didn’t really start to like her until the end of the book either, and again, I still didn’t like her that much. The storyline in this was okay, but I still had issues, although these could possibly be attributed to my dislike of the characters. I thought the way Alec suddenly kissed Poppy wasn’t really right. He’d been entrusted with her safety, and was supposed to be guarding her not kissing her! The kiss seemed to come out of nowhere, and it showed how disrespectful Alec was of his elders, when anyone could tell him that Joseph was not going to be happy about it at all. This book was about the romance, but again, the characters spoiled it for me. While there were some hot sex scenes, I hated the way Alec treated Poppy for most of this book, and I wanted to knee him where it hurts not sleep with him. How Poppy fell in love with him after the way he treated her I don’t know, but I certainly didn’t love him. There were a couple of interesting twists in the story, and it was nice to catch up with some previous characters. I had warmed a bit to Alec and Poppy by the end of the story, and the ending was good. We were left with a bit of a cliff-hanger, which does make me want to read the next book, and I just hope that the next one will be good again with Alec not the lead character (fingers crossed). Overall; okay story, but I didn’t like the lead characters, 6.5 out of 10.
**I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review** So, where to start. I have been following Christine's work since the beginning, and I have loved every minute of it. The Charmed trilogy was awesome and The Men of Brahm Hill is even better. Guarding Poppy is the second book in the series and I LOVE it. If I wasn't reading the book, I was definitely thinking about it. Thinking about what was going to happen next and how Alec & Poppy were connecting. Not only was this book a page turner, but there was more to it than that, it was like I went through the same emotions as Alec & Poppy. I haven't emotionally connected to a book in quite a while, and Alec and Poppy's story was something I think we can all relate to. Take out the paranormal aspect and its about two people who have gone though some very tough times in their life and find it hard to believe they can ever be happy. Alec has gone through so much since the beginning I couldn't wait for him to finally get everything he deserved. Going forward, I am sooooo looking forward to the next installment in the series. I hope you all enjoy these series as much as I have. Please see the kinks below for both.
Oh, Alec… I have waited a long time to hear his story. He is strong, faithful, and oh so sexy! From the very first time Poppy fell into Alec the sparks were obvious and hot. I loved how Alec did not let Poppy get away with the poor me, I am cursed, line. It seemed that was her excuse and he was quick to turn it around on her every time she said it. Alec has become the Elder that I hoped he would become. He follows the rules, yet knows when they are meant to be bent a little. Keeping his word to Joseph by protecting Poppy at all costs showed his amazing character strengths. Christine Wenrick made me so happy in bringing back the past character of Kane, mmm still dream of him, Jax and Gemma, and of course, Olivia and Caleb. I will say that this is a series that is probably best read in order, starting with The Charmed Series, but each book has just gotten better and better. I still recommend this entire series to all my friends who love the paranormal with a twist of romance.
